Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
A two-storey MANSION located on the east side of the Dorpsstraat just outside the centre of Oud-Gastel. The building adjoins the building line of the street and is situated on its rear and right sides within extensive, private grounds comprising a yard, orchard, and various outbuildings.
The property was built in 1874 for the Mastboom family and is executed in Eclectic style. The name Mastboom as well as a pair of mast trees are executed in relief on the balcony balustrade on the front facade. This notable family played a very significant role in Oud-Gastel. As early as 1774 the brewer family had established itself in Oud-Gastel from Wouw. It would provide several mayors for this place. The property on the Dorpsstraat was inhabited by the son born here of the last Mastboom who held the position of mayor in Oud-Gastel and died around the middle of the twentieth century. The property served as the mayor's residence and fulfilled an important function within the village. During the First World War military personnel were quartered there. During the Second World War the house was requisitioned by the Germans and heavy fighting took place between English and German forces, during which the stucco ceiling in the hallway was lost (restored after the war). After the English had used the property for some time it eventually came back to the Mastboom family. The property has not undergone any modern alterations, which means that the original character has been preserved in excellent condition.
