Waardering.

Description
Introduction.
A DWELLING HOUSE situated on the western side of Hoofdstraat with an adjoining CARRIAGE HOUSE, located in the centre of the village of Terheijden. Front facade in austere Eclectic style, with elements from Neo-Classicism and Neo-Renaissance, dating from around 1890. The building possesses several valuable authentic interior elements. The house was originally built for the family Oninkx and was later also inhabited by the head of the Catholic boys' school Romme. A public primary school was temporarily established in it. The carriage house is of slightly more recent date than the dwelling house. This building component is wedged between the properties at Hoofdstraat 40 and 42. The floor beam is supported on the side facades of these properties.
The dwelling house stands with its front facade directly onto the public road. At the rear there is a small garden.
Description.
The dwelling house has a rectangular floor plan, one storey and an attic storey, contained within a gabled roof with the ridge running parallel to the front facade. On the left, a somewhat set-back single-storey carriage house adjoins the house, provided with a hipped roof with the ridge running perpendicular to the front facade.
The roof of the dwelling house is covered with Dutch tiles in the traditional manner and is crowned at the ridge ends with brick chimneys with ornamental brickwork. In both roof slopes simple roof windows. The front facade is five bays wide and symmetrically arranged. The facade is constructed in brickwork in Flemish bond and is articulated horizontally by a high freestone plinth with casements under the windows and a blackened profiled drip moulding, furthermore an undecorated freestone drip moulding, which also serves as a rainwater drip edge for the windows, freestone banding with dressed casements, finally a main entablature with narrow architrave moulding, a frieze with casements and a profiled wooden cornice with small block-shaped consoles and in total six richly decorated plastered consoles with mascarons, foliage and flower motifs. Above the arched windows and the entrance there are stone segmental arches with artificial stone keystones with lion and female heads. In the central axis an entrance with freestone step, threshold and newels, window frame with beaded moulding and a richly profiled single-rout panel door with large wrought iron grille. Above the profiled edge a arched single-rout fanlight with simple leaded glass. On either side there are two windows with frames with beaded moulding and single-rout sash windows with arched fanlights, containing simple leaded glass. The windows still possess functioning 19th-century roller shutters of Antwerp manufacture.
The side facades constructed in brickwork in Flemish bond and, except for the gable ends, executed blind. Plastered plinth. The right side gable has a window with one-and-a-half-brick span, frame with beaded moulding and a T-sash frame.
At the top an ornamental wall anchor. The left side gable has two small windows with double casement windows. Rear facade with plastered plinth and profiled cornice, on the right two windows with spans, freestone rainwater drip edges, window frames with shutter grooves and rear-rout sash windows. Centrally in the facade an entrance with freestone sub-threshold and newels and replaced double door. Far left a non-original window arrangement, installed in place of a former double door to the now-disappeared conservatory. Brick cuckoo clock with wrought iron grille. Far right there is a single-storey extension with flat roof, containing an entrance with window frame with beaded moulding and a bolted door with single-rout fanlight. In the rear facade of this extension a window with window frame with shutter grooves, freestone rainwater drip edge and six-rout sash window. The carriage house has on the front a wide arched double panel door, closed by a stone segmental arch with male head as keystone. The panel doors have single-rout windows with wrought iron decorative grilles. The front facade of the carriage house also has a freestone plinth and banding and closes at the top with a wooden entablature. The roof is covered with traditional Dutch tiles. On the rear slope a non-original roof dormer. The interior still possesses several authentic elements. The building is of the central corridor type and therefore has a central corridor extending between front and rear facades. This has a white marble floor, newels and plinths, marbled panelling, above which a border with stencilled decoration in Art Nouveau style. In the rear section of the corridor a wall with tile panelling in faceted tiles with decorative edge of Art Nouveau tiles. In the corridor a plaster ceiling with central rosette in Empire style, with flower bouquets and acanthus leaf. Staircase hall with fine wooden stairpost with acanthus motifs and curved handrail in Art Nouveau style. Draught lobby with single-rout door, side and fanlights. Various profiled internal door frames and panel doors. Former adjoining room, now united into one whole, with two plaster ceilings with decorative mouldings, corner ornaments and central rosettes. Two fireplaces with cornices and black marble mantels with grey veined ornaments in Neo-Renaissance style. Windows with profiled surrounds. Front left room has simple plaster ceiling with profiled mouldings. The historical chimney mantel (white marble) comes from elsewhere and was installed around 1995. Kitchen with original fireplace, wooden shelf and tiling of blue on white tiles. This also applied in the panelling. The window wall is partly tiled with faceted tiles. Various cupboard doors with panels. Cellar with groin vaults on iron beams, red tile floor, substantial brick staircase, built in yellow IJsseltiles, wooden balustrade.
In the carriage house a floor of yellowish-brown and black tiles. In front of the rear facade a step of iron street tiles ("English bricks").
Valuation.
The object is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as an example of the socio-economic development of West Brabant. It has architectural-historical value as a good and well-preserved example of a medium-sized substantial village house from the last quarter of the 19th century, notable for the broad cornice-topped facade, the well-preserved detailing of entrance and windows, as well as by the presence of a carriage house. Furthermore on the basis of the chosen building style and building type. The building represents a village dwelling house type common in North Brabant, characterised by the broadly designed front facade and the transverse-directed gabled roof. The symmetrically arranged front facade, expressed in the interior in the central corridor with adjoining rooms is also characteristic of this. The interior possesses valuable authentic elements. The object has ensemble values because of its prominent location on the main axis of the village of Terheijden, where it can be counted among the best-preserved historic houses. The building forms a characteristic component of the historic built development along this main axis.
