Description MAIN HOUSE (1)

An almost square house built between 1778 and 1786 in a late Louis XVI style. The house consists of a cellar, two storeys and a hipped roof covered with tiles with chimneys on the four corners. Front and rear facades are five bays wide. The front facade is relatively simple with an accentuated central axis clad with natural stone, in which carved work. In this axis the door and a storey-height window and a stone step in front of it. Furthermore there are empire sash windows with shutters. The rear facade is more monumental in design with a far projecting central risalit over three bays crowned by a pediment, in which carved work. The door and flanking windows have a semicircular fanlight and a natural stone frame. In front of it a terrace with railings and a staircase to the lawn. Against the left side facade a later (ca. 1900) extension was added. Moreover this facade is disfigured by a garage door with driveway. The small shutter window on top of the rear roof dormer is presumably original. The right side facade has a symmetrical design with in the centre a bay above which a balcony. The interior of the house with regard to the layout is largely preserved. There is a central corridor/hall with rooms on either side and the large hall at the back. Perpendicular to the corridor there is on the left side the staircase. On the upper storey the layout has been somewhat disturbed. The roof truss is still completely original with the proviso that the valley gutter has been replaced by a flat roof. Of the interior finish much has been preserved especially on the ground floor: the stucco ceiling, the wall finish (stucco and marble) and floor (marble) in the hall, the stucco ceiling, fireplace section (marble chimney breast, wooden cornice) in the large hall, all in Louis XVI style. Furthermore in the right side room an older chimney breast in Louis XV style, probably from an older house and reused here. Further the staircase in the entire stairwell with railing and oval balusters. In the cellar various vault forms are encountered and in some parts a marble floor.

Valuation:

The MAIN HOUSE is of importance - on account of its architectural-historical value as a relatively rare example of a house in Louis XVI style; - on account of the reasonably well-preserved unity of exterior and interior (layout and finish); - on account of its location in the spatial concept of the layout, on the one hand the still recognizable geometrical layout to the east, on the other hand the landscape layout to the west and southwest.
