HISTORISCHE TUIN- EN PARKAANLEG. De historische tuin- en parkaanleg van de historische buitenplaats Groot- en Klein Hoenlo wordt gekenmerkt door het 19de-eeuwse park in landschapsstijl gelegen binnen een oudere formele 18de-eeuwse aanleg. Van deze aanleg, zoals te zien is op de zgn. Hottingerkaart uit 1792, bestaan ondermeer nog lanen als de oprijlaan met de aan weerszijden gelegen open weilanden en waterlopen. Het karakter van de buitenplaats wordt in sterke mate bepaald door deze rechte oprijlaan die vanaf de spoorlijn naar het huis Groot Hoenlo loopt. De laan is aan weerszijden voorzien van dubbele laanbeplanting (eiken) en rododendrons en buigt voor het huis naar links en loopt door het huispark richting Olst. Huis Groot Hoenlo ligt op een omgracht eiland dat toegankelijk is middels een brug met bakstenen keermuren. Over de buitengracht die om het omgrachte eiland loopt, ligt een tweede brug, voorzien van een entreehek. De binnengracht is aan de achterzijde sterk verbreed en wordt gevoed door een beek die slingerend door de aanleg ten noorden van het huis loopt. In de 19de eeuw is om dit water een parkaanleg in landschapsstijl gerealiseerd die gekenmerkt wordt door verschillende boomgroepen, solitairen, houtwallen en een afwisseling van open en gesloten ruimten. Het bomenbestand is zeer gevarieerd. Rechts van de oprijlaan, nabij het huis Groot Hoenlo, ligt het jachthuis en enigszins verscholen daarachter de dienstwoning. Links van de laan, schuin tegenover huis Groot Hoenlo ligt het landhuis Klein Hoenlo. Voor Klein Hoenlo ligt een royaal gazon met een open zicht vanaf de oprijlaan naar het huis. Ter plaatse van de afbuiging van de laan ligt de entree naar het huis gemarkeerd door een rijk uitgevoerd hek. Vanaf dit punt loopt een laantje schuin naar het huis. Links van dit laantje een tuin (nieuw ingedeeld). Aan de oprijlaan staan twee 19de-eeuwse natuurstenen sokkels voorzien van cannelures en beëindigd door een kapiteel met bolbekroning, die een van de entrees naar het landhuis Klein Hoenlo markeren. Links van de oprijlaan ligt een open gebied -thans grotendeels in agrarisch gebruik-, rechts van de oprijlaan ligt open parkweide, een parkbos met daarin een wandeling en met grote open weide in landschapsstijl, 19de eeuw, waar vroeger een sterrebos lag. Over de open delen lopen diverse zichtassen. De boerderij en opstallen die in dit deel van de buitenplaats liggen vallen buiten de bescherming.

HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT. The historic garden and park layout of the historic country estate Groot- en Klein Hoenlo is characterized by the 19th-century park in landscape style situated within an older formal 18th-century layout. Of this layout, as is visible on the so-called Hottinger map from 1792, there still exist among other things avenues such as the approach drive with the open meadows and watercourses on either side. The character of the country estate is strongly determined by this straight approach drive which runs from the railway line to house Groot Hoenlo. The avenue is furnished on either side with double avenue planting (oaks) and rhododendrons and curves to the left in front of the house and runs through the house park towards Olst. House Groot Hoenlo is situated on an enclosed island accessible by means of a bridge with brick retaining walls. Over the outer moat which runs around the enclosed island, lies a second bridge, furnished with an entrance gate. The inner moat is strongly widened at the rear and is fed by a stream which winds through the layout to the north of the house. In the 19th century a park layout in landscape style was realized around this water which is characterized by various tree groups, specimen trees, woodland edges and an alternation of open and closed spaces. The tree stock is very varied. To the right of the approach drive, near house Groot Hoenlo, lies the hunting lodge and somewhat concealed behind it the service dwelling. To the left of the avenue, diagonally opposite house Groot Hoenlo lies the country house Klein Hoenlo. In front of Klein Hoenlo lies a generous lawn with an open view from the approach drive towards the house. To the left of the approach drive lies an open area - now largely in agricultural use -, to the right of the approach drive lies open park meadow, a park forest with a walk in it and with large open meadow in landscape style, 19th century, where formerly a star wood lay. Various sight lines run over the open areas. The farm and outbuildings which lie in this part of the country estate fall outside the protection.
