Inleiding

Description
Introduction
At the junction of the Bossche Sloot with the Drongelens Kanaal, near Cromvoirt, is located a SLUICE GATE, as a former drainage sluice originally forming part of a large-scale project, the improvement works to the Maas, which were carried out from state funds from 1883 and were completed around 1904. This project was intended to provide for the decoupling of the Maas and the Waal. Because the Maas had no direct outlet to the sea and the river water in the Waal repeatedly stood higher than in the Maas, the latter river regularly became overloaded with excess Waal water. The result was a deterioration of the already deficient water management and regular major flooding within the Maas river basin, including in 1876 and 1880. In the so-called Maasmondwet (Maas Mouth Act), it was determined that the mouths of the Maas and Waal had to be separated. Thus a new Maas arm was constructed in the form of a canal between Hedikhuizen and Keizersveer (Bergsche Maas, completed in 1904), which discharges into the Amer. Due to the dramatically altered water management in the area, various water authority facilities had to be implemented. One of these was the construction of the Drongelens Kanaal (1896-1898), a drainage canal from Den Bosch via Waalwijk to the Bergsche Maas. The Bossche Sloot, connecting on the north side of the canal, conducted water from the Bossche side to the Drongelens Kanaal. For the purpose of the inlet, a sluice gate structure was constructed ("Sluice Bossche Sloot"), which remains intact to this day. In the second half of the 1960s, during the land consolidation project Heusden/Vlijmen, the water management in the area was radically altered and the situation around the Bossche Sloot was reversed. Currently, the sluice gate complex serves as an inlet from the Drongelens Kanaal into the Bossche Sloot.
The sluice gate in the Bossche Sloot dates from the period just before 1900 and is a manually operated structure, of which the two sluice gates of the "Stoney" type can be moved by means of cables and counterweights. By means of these sluice gates and possibly also by a number of additional stop logs, the passage can be closed.
Description
The sluice gate complex is situated at the junction of the Bossche Sloot with the Drongelens Kanaal. The whole consists of an entirely iron gantry structure, placed on a concrete substructure. This consists of two concrete abutments with bevelled flanks and sloping tops and furthermore a heavy concrete central pier with pointed-arch shaped tapering ends. Abutments and central pier form part of a concrete basin structure with corresponding floor, which is inserted into the passage from Canal to Sloot. The central pier and parts of the abutments are covered with cast-iron plates. The iron gantry structure is placed on top. This consists of three constructions formed by obliquely placed vertical members, which together form two portals. The constructions are built up from four obliquely placed vertical members each, interconnected by horizontal members and diagonal and crossing cross-bracing. All components are riveted together with rivets. A horizontal iron I-beam is passed through the upper closures. The horizontal part of the hoisting mechanism with shaft and pulleys is placed on this. This mechanism can be operated by manually operated cast-iron gear constructions with substantial operating wheels. The iron Stoney sluice gates hang on steel cables and can be raised and lowered by means of iron counterweights between the iron guides set into the abutments and central piers. At some distance from the sluice gates, there are in the abutments and central piers in both passages both on the canal side and on the sloot side double slots with iron cladding, into which additional stop logs can be inserted. These stop logs are installed during extremely high water levels or during maintenance work on the sluice gates and the concrete floor of the complex. Furthermore, old water-level gauges are present against the inner walls of the abutments and central pier. Along the south side of the portal, a simple footbridge with iron railings and wooden deck has been constructed.
Valuation
The object is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as an intact component of the large-scale Maas improvement works in the period around 1900, which resulted in greatly improved water management and with it increased safety and greater exploitation opportunities within the lower course area of the Maas. In that sense, the object is of high historical-hydrological significance.
Furthermore, the object is of historical-constructive importance as an expression of engineering architecture from the period around 1900, on the one hand drawing on traditional-craft principles (use of cast iron, manual operating mechanism), on the other hand with the application of modern materials and systems (concrete structures, Stoney sluice gates). The construction from circa 1900, with concrete substructure and iron portal, has been preserved in virtually authentic condition as a whole. Since comparable intact structures in the Netherlands have become relatively scarce, the object has a certain rarity value.
The object with surrounding green elements and water bodies has ensemble values because of its location, forming a characteristic component of the environment determined by historical hydrological structures of the Drongelens Kanaal and the Bossche Sloot. There is a high situational value.
