Inleiding
Het WOONHUIS is gelegen aan de westelijke zijde van de Taalstraat en staat aan beide zijde los van de aangrenzende panden. Aan de rechterzijde van het woonhuis wordt de steeg naar het achterterrein afgesloten door een smalle poort. Het woonhuis werd in 1880 gebouwd voor een officier van de Genie, die het naar eigen ontwerp liet bouwen. Het woonhuis vertoont stijlelementen van het Eclecticisme. In 1950 werd het woonhuis uitgebreid met een eenlaags aanbouw aan de rechtergevel, aansluitend op de keuken. Ook werd het dakschild aan de voorzijde van het woonhuis voorzien van een tweetal nieuwe daklichten. Rond 1995 werd een kleine schuur aan de achterzijde van het woonhuis gesloopt en de vensterpartij ter hoogte van de achterkamer gewijzigd.
Omschrijving
Het woonhuis heeft een globaal rechthoekige plattegrond en telt aan de voorzijde anderhalve en aan de achterzijde twee bouwlagen onder een afgeplat schilddak, gedekt met geglazuurde oud-Hollandse pannen. Schoorstenen boven beide kopgevels. De gevels van het woonhuis zijn opgetrokken in baksteen, met een hardstenen plint en sierelementen in stucwerk.
De voorgevel is symmetrisch en telt vijf traveeën. In het midden van de voorgevel de ingangspartij, die wordt gevormd door een houten paneeldeur met een afgerond bovenlicht. De ingang is voorzien van een hardstenen trap. Aan weerszijden van de ingang twee aan de bovenzijde afgeronde vensters met achtruits schuiframen. De vensters en de ingangspartij hebben een omlijsting in stucwerk, aan de bovenzijde bekroond met rijk gedetailleerde kuiven. Onder de vensters is de borstwering gemarkeerd door casementen. Boven deze casementen een horizontale lijst, onder de vensters voorzien van voluutvormige consoles. Onder de geprofileerde bakgoot een kroonlijst in stucwerk, met rijk gedetailleerde consoles. Tussen deze consoles is de lijst voorzien van kleine, zeshoekige lichtopeningen. Op de hoeken wordt de voorgevel afgesloten door geblokte hoekpilasters met cannelures, eveneens in stucwerk uitgevoerd. De sober uitgevoerde achtergevel is in tegenstelling tot de voorgevel niet symmetrisch. In het midden van deze gevel de achteringang, aansluitend op de centrale gang. Deze acheringang heeft een getoogd bovenlicht en is voorzien van een moderne deur. Links hiervan een klein toiletraampje. Links in de achtergevel, ter hoogte van de keuken een hoog getoogd venster met achtruits schuifraam. Rechts van de achteringang, ter hoogte van de achterkamer is de vensterpartij gewijzigd (oorspronkelijk hier een venster met T-raam en luiken). Op de bovenverdieping is de gevel ter hoogte van de gang hoger opgetrokken. In dit hogere middendeel is een rondboogvenster met zesruits raam aangebracht. Links hiervan een getoogd venster met stolpraam. Rechts in de achtergevel een balkon. Ter hoogte van de slaapkamers twee lage, rechtgesloten vensters met kleine roedenverdeling. De zuidelijke gevel, die dicht op de gevel van het aangrenzende pand staat, heeft geen vensters. De noordelijke gevel van het woonhuis heeft aan de rechterzijde een aanbouw voor een schuurtje, daterend uit 1951. Op de bovenverdieping een tweetal rechtgesloten vensters met T-ramen. De smalle doorgang aan de noordzijde van het woonhuis wordt aan de straatzijde afgesloten door een smal zijpoortje met stucversiering. In het interieur is de dispositie zowel op de begane grond als de bovenverdieping enigszins gewijzigd. Op de begane grond is de oorspronkelijke scheidingsmuur tussen voor- en achterkamer weggebroken. Op de bovenverdieping is het aantal slaapkamers vergroot. Verder vinden we in het interieur nog een aantal oorspronkelijke elementen. Onder meer in de voorkamer en de studeerkamer rechts van de gang, aan de voorzijde van het woonhuis nog originele stucplafonds en binnenluiken. In de gang wordt de boog naar het trappenhuis afgesloten door een lijst in stucwerk, versierd met consoles en kuif met bloemmotieven. Verder een houten trap met houten trappalen en gietijzeren stijlen.
Waardering
Het woonhuis is van algemeen belang en bezit cultuurhistorische waarde als uitdrukking van het belang van Vught en met name de Taalstraat als nederzetting met vele luxueuze villa's, herenhuizen en woonhuizen voor welgestelde burgers. Het woonhuis bezit architectuurhistorische waarde door de bijzonder rijke detaillering en het materiaalgebruik. Het woonhuis bezit ensemblewaarde vanwege de bijzondere betekenis van het pand voor het aanzien van de historische dorpskern van Vught en van de oude verbindingsweg 's-Hertogenbosch - Eindhoven. The simply executed rear facade is, in contrast to the front facade, not symmetrical. In the middle of this facade the rear entrance, adjoining the central corridor. This rear entrance has a arched fanlight and is provided with a modern door. To the left of it a small toilet window. On the left in the rear facade, at the height of the kitchen a tall arched window with rear-glazed sash window. To the right of the rear entrance, at the height of the back room the window arrangement has been modified (originally a window with T-frame and shutters here). On the upper storey the facade at the height of the corridor is built higher. In this higher central section a round-arched window with six-pane window is installed. In the interior the layout on both the ground floor and the upper storey has been somewhat modified. On the ground floor the original dividing wall between the front and back rooms has been removed. On the upper storey the number of bedrooms has been increased. Furthermore in the interior we still find a number of original elements. Including in the front room and the study room to the right of the corridor, on the front of the dwelling house still original stucco ceilings and interior shutters. In the corridor the arch to the stairwell is closed off by a band in stucwork, decorated with consoles and cornices with flower motifs.
