Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The DWELLING HOUSE is located at the corner of Helvoirtseweg-Taalstraat, where it is partly incorporated into a closed building block. In the Taalstraat it adjoins the neighbouring building, on the Helvoirtseweg it is separated from the adjacent building – the former town hall of Vught – by a low, narrow gate leading to a small inner courtyard. The dwelling house, which exhibits stylistic elements of Eclecticism, was built around 1860-1870 on the instruction of burgemeester P.J. van Heeswijk. The cellar of the dwelling house is possibly older. Between 1911 and 1915 the dwelling house came into the possession of a cigar merchant and the building was partly rebuilt as a shop, with a shop front being installed in the section to the left of the entrance. In 1979 the building was largely restored to its original state. Due to various recent alterations the internal layout has, however, been greatly changed. Currently the former dwelling house is in use as a commercial premises.
Description
The partly cellarage dwelling house has a roughly rectangular plan, with a lower (more modern) single-storey extension at the rear under a flat roof, which falls outside the protection. The building has one storey under a gabled roof with half-hipped end, covered with beaver-tail tiles. Along the roof a rain gutter. The facades are built in brick, partly with plasterwork: attic, plinth, corner pilasters, window surrounds and the entire eastern facade are plastered. The building has slightly rounded windows at the top with T-windows. Above the plinth of the building a horizontal moulding, below the windows provided with volute-shaped consoles.
The front facade (northern facade) has six bays. The entrance is located in the third bay from the right and consists of a wooden panelled door with window and fanlight. A low sandstone step leads to this entrance. Above the entrance and windows wink-brow arches with hood mouldings are installed in this front facade. The front facade is closed off by a cornice with frieze, in which a small hexagonal window is installed per bay, with between them an imitation of stone blocks with bossage.
The eastern facade, located along the Taalstraat, has two bays. On the upper storey two lower windows with four-pane opening sashes. These are, like the windows on the ground floor, slightly rounded at the top. Both on ground floor and upper storey the windows are crowned by a hood moulding.
The western facade, which is whitewashed, has a modern window on the upper storey. The rear facade of the building, which faces a small courtyard, is largely hidden behind a more modern single-storey extension under a flat roof.
The internal layout of the former dwelling house has been greatly changed as a result of the various functions established in this building over the course of time. Only the front room to the right of the entrance still gives an impression of the original decoration: this includes, among other things, the stucco ceiling, a chimneybreast and wooden interior shutters of importance.
Along the front of the dwelling house seven sandstone bollards with wrought-iron chains.
Valuation
The dwelling house is of general interest. The dwelling house has cultural-historical value as a particular example of the luxurious dwelling houses for notables in the villa village of Vught. The dwelling house possesses architectural-historical value through the particular detailing and the particular use of materials, notably the fairly rare beaver-tail tiles. The dwelling house possesses ensemble value because of the particular significance of the building for the appearance of the historic village centre of Vught. The dwelling house is of importance in relation to the visual integrity of this village centre.
