Inleiding

Introduction

The COUNTRY HOUSE with COACH HOUSE "Vijverhof" is located along the Esscheweg, which at the time of construction was still a rural area outside the core of Vught. The country house is surrounded by a large moated garden. The building was constructed around 1860 on the instructions of brewer Van Heeswijk and displays stylistic elements of Eclecticism. The stucco mouldings of the windows, the balcony with ornamental railings and the stucco ceilings in the interior are presumably of a later date and were possibly applied around 1870 on the instructions of Van Heeswijk's son. In 1994 the roof was partially renewed and the roof was provided with several roof windows.

Description

The country house has a roughly rectangular ground plan and comprises one storey under a composite hipped roof, covered with old Dutch tiles. Adjoining the southwestern corner of the country house lies a single-storey coach house under a gabled roof, also covered with old Dutch tiles. The facades of country house and coach house are built in brick, with a hardstone plint.

The front facade (eastern facade) has the form of a cut-off gable and is provided with two drip mouldings. The entrance to the country house is located in the centre of the symmetrical front facade. Above this is a balcony with ornamental wrought-iron railings, resting on columns with ornamental wrought-iron work. The entrance is reached via a low staircase and consists of a double opening panel door with simple leaded glass fanlight. On either side hereof three T-windows rounded at the top with stucco mouldings with cove and flower motifs.

On the upper storey at the location of the balcony a double false door with fanlight. The balcony doors above the main entrance are provided with simple leaded glass windows and a leaded glass fanlight. Also on the upper storey windows with T-windows and stucco moulding with cove. At the level of the attic, under the cornice, three small round windows. The remaining facades of the country house are considerably more soberly executed. The northern facade has two closed rectangular windows with sash windows, with between these a small round window.

The rear facade (western facade) has at the level of the back room two closed rectangular windows with sash windows. In the centre of the rear facade a wooden door with simple leaded glass windows and leaded glass fanlight, opening onto the central hall. To the right of this the kitchen. This has in the rear facade a kitchen door with multi-pane window and fanlight. Following this a closed rectangular window with multi-pane window and fanlight. Far right an almost identical door, leading to the scullery/storage. The southern facade has at the level of the large front room two windows slightly rounded at the top with T-window. Far left in this facade a wooden door with multi-pane window and fanlight, leading to the scullery/storage.

The internal layout of the country house is largely maintained in the original state: a long central hall with to the left the large front room and at the rear the kitchen and to the right a narrower front room, the staircase and a back room. In the hall is still the original tile floor. Furthermore in the interior are of particular importance: the interior shutters in the rooms on the ground floor, particularly richly ornamented stucco ceilings in the front rooms (neo-Renaissance detailing), window niches with wooden seating benches, black marble fireplace.

Adjoining the southwestern corner of the country house the former coach house. The gate of this coach house was in the eastern facade and is now bricked up. On either side of the gate a small round window. In the northern facade a wooden clamped door with fanlight from the rear garden provides access to the coach house. To the left of this door a wrought-iron lantern and pump.

Valuation

The country house "Vijverhof" is of public importance. It possesses cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a social-economic development, namely the growth of the rural settlement Vught into a place of residence for nobility, patricians and wealthy citizens from in particular 's-Hertogenbosch: it illustrates the importance of Vught as a settlement with many country houses and villas. The country house has architectural-historical value owing to the rich detailing and the use of materials. The country house is of importance owing to the integrity of interior and exterior and owing to the moating of the garden.
