Inleiding
Het POORTGEBOUW met WOONHUIS ligt direct aan de weg en geeft toegang tot de Joodse begraafplaats. Het gebouw werd opgetrokken in 1855. Het woonhuis is gebouwd in een traditioneel-ambachtelijke stijl, de poort, die is ontworpen door J. Hartogensis, toont Neo-Classicistische vormen. De begraafplaats zelf is van oudere datum: de aanleg dateert uit de late 18de eeuw. In het poortgebouw bevindt zich een ruimte die oorspronkelijk dienst deed als aula. Hierin werd voorafgaande aan de begrafenis een korte dienst gehouden. Thans doet het poortgebouw niet meer als zodanig dienst, maar fungeert als opslagruimte bij het woonhuis.
Omschrijving
Het gebouw heeft een globaal rechthoekige plattegrond en telt één bouwlaag onder een zadeldak, gedekt met oud-Hollandse pannen. De muren zijn opgetrokken in gewitte baksteen. Links in het gebouw bevindt zich een rondboogpoort, aan de bovenzijde afgesloten door een fronton. In de boogzwikken een laagreliëf met palmmotieven. Ook de sluitsteen in de boog is voorzien van een palmmotief. Aan weerszijden van de boogstijlen muurwerk met schijnvoegen. De poort heeft zware houten paneeldeuren en een bovenlicht waarvoor siersmeedwerk is aangebracht. In het fronton een Davidsster. Langs de kroonlijst een Hebreeuwse tekst uit Job III, vertaald: "Klein en groot is daar gelijk en de slaaf is vrij van zijn heer". De woning rechts van de poort heeft een drietal eenvoudige rechtgesloten vensters en een tweetal deuren met bovenlicht, waarvan de meest linkse toegang geeft tot een smalle gang naast het poortgebouw. Rechts van deze ingang een jaartalsteen met de naam J. Hartogensis.
De rechterzijgevel van de woning is recentelijk betimmerd. In de achtergevel van het woonhuis hebben zich enige wijzigingen voorgedaan, o.a. nieuwe vensters. Rechts een kleine uitbouw voor het poortgebouw, met een korfboogvormige doorgang, voorzien van eenvoudige houten deuren. Ook in de linkerzijgevel zijn nieuwe vensters aangebracht.
In het inwendige is met name de ruimte in het poortgebouw van belang. Deze ruimte heeft een tegelvloer en een eenvoudig balkenplafond. Langs de wanden een houten lambrizering, waarin een drietal marmeren gedenkplaten met Hebreeuwse teksten is geplaatst.
Waardering
Het object is van algemeen belang en bezit cultuurhistorische waarde als uitdrukking van geestelijke en sociaal-economische ontwikkelingen: het illustreert de groei van de Joodse gemeenschap in Vught en 's-Hertogenbosch in de negentiende eeuw en de Joodse begrafenisgebruiken in deze periode. Het complex is van architectuurhistorisch belang vanwege de hoogwaardige esthetische kwaliteiten en de ornamentiek van het poortgebouw. Introduction
The GATEHOUSE with DWELLING is located directly beside the road and provides access to the Jewish cemetery. The building was erected in 1855. The dwelling is built in a traditional-craft style, the gate, which was designed by J. Hartogensis, displays Neo-Classical forms. The cemetery itself is of older date: its layout dates from the late 18th century. Within the gatehouse is a space that originally served as a hall. A brief service was held here prior to burial. At present the gatehouse no longer serves this function, but functions as storage space for the dwelling.
Description
The building has an approximately rectangular plan and comprises one storey beneath a gabled roof, covered with old Dutch tiles. The walls are built in rendered brick. On the left of the building is a round-arched gate, closed at the top by a pediment. In the arch spandrels a low relief with palm motifs. The keystone in the arch is also provided with a palm motif. On either side of the arch jambs is masonry with false joints. The gate has heavy wooden panel doors and a fanlight with ornamental ironwork. In the pediment is a Star of David. Along the cornice runs a Hebrew text from Job III, translated: "Small and great are there alike and the slave is free from his master". The dwelling to the right of the gate has three simple right-angled windows and two doors with fanlights, the leftmost of which provides access to a narrow passage beside the gatehouse. To the right of this entrance is a date stone with the name J. Hartogensis.
The right side gable of the dwelling has been recently boarded over. The rear gable of the dwelling has undergone some changes, including new windows. On the right a small extension to the gatehouse, with a basket-arched passage, provided with simple wooden doors. New windows have also been fitted in the left side gable.
