Inleiding

Kropholler.

Introduction

The SACRISTAN'S RESIDENCE with PARISH HOUSE is located on the corner of Taalstraat-Deken van Ossstraat. The sacristan's residence is situated on the Taalstraat and the parish house on the Deken van Ossstraat. The parish house directly adjoins the block of residential houses on the Deken van Ossstraat, which also forms part of the Mariaplein complex. The sacristan's residence with parish house was built around 1936 in Traditionalist style, designed by architect A.J. Kropholler. The client was the parish Maria Middelares aller Genaden. Kropholler incorporated into the building the cellars, the eastern and northern facades of the factory building of the book and stone printing works Henri Bogaerts, which displays stylistic features and dates from circa 1870. The front facade of this former factory building shows similarities with the still-existing manufacturer's house of the Bogaerts family at Taalstraat 53. The factory complex was replaced by the church and associated buildings around Mariaplein. The parish house is now in use as a sports hall, the former sacristan's residence still serves a residential function. The northern side of the patronage building is provided with a number of modern extensions. The living room on the ground floor of the former sacristan's residence has been incorporated into the sports hall.

Description

The building has a roughly rectangular floor plan and consists of the two-storey sacristan's residence on the Taalstraat, with behind it the elongated single-storey parish house along the Deken van Ossstraat. The sacristan's residence has a partly flat roof. The northern and eastern facades, originating from the former factory building, are constructed in machine-made brick, the facade along the Deken van Ossstraat is constructed in cloister bricks. The eastern facade of the sacristan's residence is provided with pilasters, frieze, cornice and window surrounds in stucco.

The front facade of the sacristan's residence situated on the Taalstraat (eastern facade) has a two-part structure, consisting of a projecting section on the right with two window bays and stepped gable, and on the left a narrower, straight closed facade section in which the entrance to the sacristan's residence is located. These facade sections have stucco corner pilasters: on the ground floor these are block pilasters, on the upper storey pilasters with casements. Between the two storeys a stucco frieze is applied. At the top the facade is finished with a strongly projecting cornice, supported by consoles. The sacristan's residence has arched windows with T-windows and stucco surrounds in the front facade, provided at the top with a hood. The entrance consists of a simple panelled door with a tall arched fanlight.

In the stepped gable a small round window with stucco surround.

The southern facade, wholly designed by Kropholler (situated on the Deken van Ossstraat), contrasts strongly through its austere, closed character with the front facade of the building. Far right in the two-storey section of this facade there is, in a shallow portal closed by a lancet arch, the entrance to the former parish house. The entrance is formed by a heavy oak clamped double plank door. Above it a small round window. On the upper storey of the sacristan's house, at the level of the stairwell a lancet window with leaded glass window. The facade section for the parish house has five tall lancet windows with sill, filled with leaded glass windows. Far left in the southern facade a rear entrance. This, like the main entrance of the parish house, is located in a shallow portal under a lancet arch and has a clamped oak panelled door with a small diamond-shaped window. In front of this rear entrance a low ashlar step.

The northern facade of the parish house, consisting of a facade of the former factory building, has a bay division with wall recesses and lisenes. The wall recesses are closed at the top by a dentil course and a roll moulding. Below this a course of masonry consisting of lighter-coloured bricks. In 1936 lancet windows with leaded glass windows were inserted in the wall recesses, marked at the top with a slightly projecting lancet arch. In the rightmost wall recess three rectangular windows. Adjacent to the northern facade a number of modern single-storey extensions for toilets and a changing room.

The interior of the parish house consists of a large hall, with a stage arranged against the west side over the full width. In this stage a prompter's box. Below the stage there were formerly changing rooms. Against the northern wall of the parish house a bar. The roof of the large hall rests on bent concrete beams on stepped supports. Among the important elements of the original interior decoration are: the oak wainscotting and tile wainscotting (behind the heating), the leaded glass windows by Kees van Stipthout (1936), the tile wainscotting in the hall of the parish house.

In the sacristan's residence there have been some changes in the layout: the front room of the residence on the ground floor has been incorporated into the large hall and toilet facilities have been recently installed here.

Valuation

The parish house with sacristan's residence is of general importance. The object has cultural-historical value as a distinctive expression of social-economic and spiritual development. It illustrates the manner in which the Roman Catholic Church integrated into society in the period between the two world wars.
