Inleiding
Het CREMATORIUM, behorend bij het voormalige concentratiekamp Vught, is gelegen op de noordoostelijke hoek van het concentratiekampterrein. Hier werden de overleden gevangenen gecremeerd. Hiervoor waren twee vaste crematieovens en een verplaatsbare oven in het gebouw aanwezig. Tevens was er een sectiekamer in ondergebracht. Het crematorium werd gebouwd in 1943-'44 en toont een Ambachtelijke vormentaal, met verwijzingen naar het vormenidioom van de Stuttgarter Schule. Heden is het crematorium onderdeel van het "Nationaal Monument Kamp Vught". In het interieur, dat qua dispositie vrijwel ongewijzigd is, zijn de crematieovens en de snijtafel in de sectiekamer nog aanwezig.
Omschrijving
Het crematoriumgebouw heeft een plattegrond bestaande uit twee op elkaar aansluitende L-vormen. Het gebouw telt één bouwlaag onder een samengesteld schilddak, gedekt met verbeterde Hollandse pannen. Boven het dak een drietal schoorstenen, boven het crematoriumgedeelte een hoge bakstenen schoorsteen, verstevigd met ijzeren strips. De gevels zijn opgetrokken in baksteen. Het crematorium heeft stolpvensters met kleine roedenverdeling. De twee hoofdingangen van het crematorium zijn gelegen in de lange oostelijke gevel: links de ingang voor de vertrekken van de arts, rechts een iets bredere ingang die toegang gaf tot het eigenlijke crematorium. Deze ingangspartijen bestaan uit eenvoudige opgeklampte deuren. Links van de ingang naar de vertrekken voor de arts twee kleinere vensters met kleine roedenverdeling. Geheel rechts in de oostelijke gevel een niet oorspronkelijk venster met verduisteringsschot ter plaatse ven een gereconstrueerde gevangeniscel op de noordoostelijke hoek van het crematorium. De noordelijke gevel heeft ter plaatse van het vertrek links van het crematorium een klein éénruits venster. Op de noordwestelijke hoek een lagere éénlaags aanbouw onder schilddak. Deze aanbouw heeft in de oostelijke gevel, vlak onder het dak een drietal kleine vensters met kleine roedenverdeling. Aan de achterzijde (westelijke gevel) de gemoderniseerde ingang van deze aanbouw. In de westelijke gevel van de noordelijke vleugel een achteringang, die direct op de crematoriumruimte uitkomt.
In het inwendige van het crematoriumgebouw is de oorspronkelijke dispositie grotendeels gehandhaafd. In de oostelijke vleugel aan de voorzijde een gang. Hierlangs zijn de vertrekken van de arts gelegen: links een zitkamer en behandelkamer, rechts hiervan achtereenvolgens een toilet, kantoorruimte, laboratorium en een snijkamer met sectietafel. In de noordelijke vleugel aan de voorzijde, rechts van de ingang, een reconstructie van gevangeniscel 115 uit de "Bunker" (complexonderdeel 10). Hierachter een ruimte, die bestemd was voor de opslag van lijken. In de meest westelijke helft van de noordelijke vleugel twee vaste crematieovens.
Waardering
Het crematorium, behorend bij het complex van het voormalige concentratiekamp Vught, is van algemeen belang. Het crematorium bezit cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een historische ontwikkeling: als onderdeel van een tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog door de bezetter gebouwd concentratiekampcomplex is het gebouw van grote historische waarde. Voorts heeft het crematorium als herinnering aan de behandeling van gevangenen in het concentratiekamp grote historische waarde. Het crematorium vormt daarnaast ook een voorbeeld van een typologische ontwikkeling. These entrance sections consist of simple clamped doors. To the left of the entrance to the doctor's quarters, two smaller windows with small glazing bars. Far right in the eastern facade, a non-original window with blackout shutter in place of a reconstructed prison cell on the northeastern corner of the crematorium. The northern facade has, at the location of the room to the left of the crematorium, a small single-pane window. On the northwestern corner, a lower single-storey extension beneath a hipped roof. This extension has, in the eastern facade, just below the roof, three small windows with small glazing bars. On the rear side (western facade) the modernized entrance to this extension.
