Inleiding

Introduction

The BARRACKS, belonging to the complex of the former concentration camp Vught, is located on the south-eastern side of the actual concentration camp grounds. This building is the only remaining one of the 43 barracks in which accommodation and workshops for prisoners were housed. In the barracks used as 'residential barracks' an average of 240 prisoners were accommodated. Barracks number 1 was, like the other barracks, divided into two sections (1a and 1b) and housed the postal department and the canteen of the concentration camp. The barracks were constructed in 1943-44 and display a Craft language of forms. After the Second World War, a number of the barracks, including barracks 1, remained in use as part of a Moluccan residential community. In the 1990s the majority of these barracks were demolished to make way for new construction. Barracks 1 is currently in use as a church space for the Moluccan community in Vught and has been partially (the western section/barracks 1A) renovated/restored.

Description

The BARRACKS have a rectangular floor plan and comprise one storey under a low gabled roof on timber rafters, covered with modern corrugated sheets and furnished with a box gutter. The facades are built in machine-made brick. The barracks have straight-topped windows, fitted with a frame window, with a two-pane hinged window above. The entrance to section 1B is located in the eastern gable end and consists of a modern double opening door with three-pane fanlight. Modern canopy. To the left of this a large straight-topped window. In the long southern facade a side entrance with fanlight. The entrance to barracks 1A is located in the western gable end. On the northern side of the western facade a modern bell cote.

Valuation

The BARRACKS, belonging to the complex of the former concentration camp Vught, is of general importance. The barracks possess cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a historical development: as part of a concentration camp complex built by the occupier during the Second World War the barracks possess historical value. Furthermore, the barracks have great historical value as a reminder of the treatment of prisoners in the concentration camp. The barracks possess ensemble value as an essential component of a larger whole, which is historically of (inter-)national importance. The barracks are of importance as an illustration of a typological development. Finally, the barracks are of importance because of functional and typological rarity.
