Inleiding

Introduction

The DWELLING HOUSE of the SS commanders, belonging to the former concentration camp Vught, is located on the western side of the SS grounds, to the south of the actual camp grounds. The dwelling house was built in 1943 and shows a Craft vocabulary with references to the formal idiom of the Stuttgarter Schule. This dwelling house and the officers' mess formed the most 'prestigious' buildings on the SS grounds, which stood out because of their thatched roof. After the Second World War the dwelling house was subdivided into several dwellings, whereby the internal layout was changed. The dwelling house now belongs to the Van Brederokazerne and still has a residential function.

Description

The dwelling house has a U-shaped ground plan consisting of an elongated north-south oriented wing with a veranda and two shorter building sections placed transversely to it. The dwelling house has one storey under a composite hipped roof, covered with thatch and frost tiles. Chimneys above the southern and northern cross wings. The walls are built in brick. The dwelling house has on the eastern side along the entire length of the north-south oriented wing a veranda, opened with segmental arches on square brick pillars. Behind this were originally two (later four) entrance sections for the dwelling house, one in the middle of the elongated wing and two in the shorter cross wings. These entrance sections are formed by a wooden door with a narrow four-pane window and a hardstone threshold. To the right of the middle of the long north-south wing two original entrances under a relieving arch. To the left of the middle two later added entrance sections. To the left of these two casement windows with between them a small square window with a hinged frame, far right three windows under segmental arch.

In the northern and southern gables of the short cross wings adjoining the veranda, three wall recesses have been arranged, which are closed off at the top by segmental arches. The short eastern gables of the cross wings are provided with a three-sided bay window. In the southern side gable the window arrangement has been altered. Only to the right still an original window with casement frame.

The rear gable of the dwelling house is provided with recessed windows with casement frames, far right still three casement frames with the original small glazing bars. To the left in the rear gable a rear entrance with modern door.

The northern side gable has to the left a recessed window with casement frame, to the right two wider recessed windows, of which the glazing bars have been removed.

In the dwelling house the internal layout has been greatly altered as a result of the later subdivision into multiple dwellings. The roof with round timber trusses is still original.

Valuation

The dwelling house for SS officers, belonging to the complex of the former concentration camp Vught, is of general importance. The dwelling house possesses cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a historical development: as part of a concentration camp complex built by the occupying power during the Second World War, the dwelling house is of great historical importance. Furthermore, the dwelling house is of importance as an illustration of a typological development. The dwelling house possesses ensemble value as an essential component of concentration camp Vught, which is of cultural-historical importance of (inter-)national significance. The dwelling house is finally of importance because of its functional and typological rarity.
