Inleiding

Introduction

The former BARRACKS, belonging to the Vught concentration camp, is located east of the Lunettenlaan, along the north side of the Boslaan. The barracks consists of four identical buildings. During the Second World War, this barracks building housed two companies of the SS-Wachtbataillon Nord-West, which were responsible for external security: a large area surrounding the grounds of Vught concentration camp was cordoned off and guarded by SS personnel from the guard battalion. The barracks was built in 1943 and displays a Craft architecture style, with elements of Functionalism and references to the formal language of the Stuttgarter Schule. Today the building houses the Lunettenkazerne.

Description

The barracks building consists of four separate L-shaped structural units, which are virtually identical and together form a ground plan in the shape of a cross. These structural units are positioned with their front facades facing a cross-shaped courtyard, where plantings with trees are laid out in the middle of the arms of the cross. The barracks building has one storey under a high hipped roof, covered with improved Dutch tiles. Above the roof planes, elongated roof dormers extending over virtually the entire width of the roof plane. Above the gable ends, smaller roof dormers. The facades of the barracks building, which are plainly designed, are constructed of brick. Natural stone is used around the entrance areas.

In the front facades facing the cross-shaped courtyard, the four structural units have in both wings two entrance areas, which are formed by a shallow portico, closed at the top by a segmental arch. Around the entrance a profiled natural stone frame with a block-shaped keystone at the top. The entrance area consists of a double wooden entrance door with small windows, accessible via a stone staircase. The rooms on either side of the entrance areas are provided in the front and rear facades with arched windows with cross windows, containing four-pane windows.

The gable ends of the four L-shaped structural units have a small, simpler side entrance, which is formed by a wooden door with small panes, provided with an arched fanlight and narrow side lights. Here also a natural stone staircase. On either side of the side entrance an arched window with cross window. In the rear facades, the L-shaped structural units have per wing one entrance area, located in a shallow portico under a segmental arch.

The interior of the barracks building has been modernised over time.

Valuation

The barracks building of the SS guard battalion, belonging to the former Vught concentration camp, is of general importance. The barracks building possesses cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a historical development: as part of a concentration camp complex built by the occupier during the Second World War, the building is of great historical value. Furthermore, the barracks building is of significance as an illustration of a typological development: it is characteristic of the barracks built by the occupiers during the Second World War and is exceptional within this building type because of its unique cross-shaped ground plan. The barracks building has architectural-historical value because of the building style, a combination of Functionalist elements and the formal language of the Stuttgarter Schule. The barracks building possesses ensemble value as an essential component of a larger whole, which is historically of (inter)national importance. Finally, the barracks building is of significance because of the integrity of its exterior and because of typological and functional rarity.
