Inleiding

Introduction

The Jugendstil DOUBLE FLAT WITH MAISONETTE was built in 1911 at the request of B.V. Pessers-Daniëls to the design of architect Jos Donders.

Description

The three- to four-storey building has a rectangular plan and a flat roof. The facades are constructed of machine-made brick with decorative components and a high basement of ashlar. The three-part division of the facade is accentuated by the local half-brick projection of the narrow corner projections and the centre section with balcony and bay, with the projecting and recessed wall openings also rhythmically alternating. In the middle there are two sash windows with ashlar sills, worked lintels and fanlights with small glazing bars in green glass. From the sills a curved line in the ashlar gives the starting point for the projection of the corner sections. On the ground floor these have an arched portico with each two cushion panel doors with an ornamental wrought iron grille. The doors to the upper dwelling have an ashlar step with iron railing. The fanlights of the doors have, like all fanlights, small glazing bars in green glass. In the right portico there is a foundation stone with the text: "Nicolaas Bernard en Henrica Pessers 2 nov. 1911". Above the doors is a segmental bay window with a six-part window. In the middle is a loggia with double doors and side lights. The parapets are of brick with ashlar accents at the base and corners. On the second storey the corner sections have a cross window variant. The centre section has a three-sided bay window on ashlar ornamental consoles and a wooden cornice on consoles. On either side of the window there is simple ornamental plasterwork. Above the bay window, as a canopy, a far-projecting wooden gutter line is placed. The left corner is crowned above the cross window by a plastered arch with three ornamental blocks. The right section has an additional storey with a coupled three-part window, giving it a tower-like finish. Sober decorative brickwork and plasterwork together with the pyramidal spire on which shingles are laid form the highest point of the building.

Valuation

The double flat with maisonette is of general importance. The building has cultural historical value as an example of a typological development. It has architectural significance because of its place in the architect's work. The building has ensemble value as part of a larger whole, which is of cultural historical, architectural and urban planning significance of national importance. The building is important because of the integrity of its exterior and in relation to the structural and visual integrity of the surroundings.
