Inleiding
STANDBEELD van Petrus Donders uit 1926. Ontwerp van Johannes Petrus Maas en Zonen (Haarlem). Het is uitgevoerd door P.G. du Chateau en Zonen, (Rotterdam/Schiedam) en onthuld op 26 augustus 1926. Het beeld bevindt zich in de noordwesthoek van het Wilhelminapark.
Petrus Donders, in de volksmond 'Peerke' genoemd, een Tilburgse weverszoon, vertrok na zijn priesterwijding rond 1840 naar Suriname, waar hij zich toelegde op de melaatsenzorg. Hiervoor kreeg hij na zijn overlijden de eretitel 'Apostel der melaatsen'; in 1982 is hij zalig verklaard. Het initiatief voor het beeld ging in 1921 uit van de wijkvereniging Noorderbelang (een wijk waar veel wevers woonden); de benodigde gelden werden door de Tilburgse bevolking bijeengebracht.
Omschrijving.
Het bronzen standbeeld staat op een gelede, taps toelopende achthoekige sokkel van Euville kalksteen. Aan de voorkant op de sokkel bevindt zich een bronzen belettering met de naam Petrus Donders en aan de zijkanten bronzen schildjes met aan de ene kant het wapen van Tilburg en aan de andere kant een schip op zee. Staande is Petrus Donders afgebeeld, gehuld in een priestertoog, met een crucifix in de geheven rechterhand boven een geknielde oosterse figuur, die gekleed is in een lendendoek. Het corpus is verdwenen.
Waardering
Het standbeeld is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorisch belang als voorbeeld van een sociaal-economische en geestelijke ontwikkeling, namelijk de versterking van de rol van het katholicisme in de maatschappij in het interbellum, tot uiting komend in de waardering voor de uit Tilburg afkomstige zalige Peerke Donders. Het heeft kunsthistorisch belang voor de geschiedenis van de openbare standbeelden en vanwege de plaats in het werk van het atelier Maas. STATUE of Petrus Donders from 1926. Design by Johannes Petrus Maas and Zonen (Haarlem). It was executed by P.G. du Chateau and Zonen, (Rotterdam/Schiedam) and unveiled on 26 August 1926. The statue is located in the north-west corner of Wilhelminapark.
Petrus Donders, in the vernacular 'Peerke', a Tilburg weaver's son, departed after his ordination around 1840 to Suriname, where he devoted himself to the care of lepers. For this he received the honorary title 'Apostle of the Lepers' after his death; in 1982 he was beatified. The initiative for the statue came in 1921 from the neighbourhood association Noorderbelang (a neighbourhood where many weavers lived); the necessary funds were raised by the Tilburg population.
Description.
The bronze statue stands on a jointed, tapering octagonal plinth of Euville limestone. On the front of the plinth is a bronze inscription with the name Petrus Donders and on the sides bronze plaques with on one side the coat of arms of Tilburg and on the other side a ship at sea. Petrus Donders is depicted standing, clothed in a priest's robe, with a crucifix in his raised right hand above a kneeling oriental figure, who is clothed in a loincloth. The corpus has disappeared.
Valuation
The statue is of general importance. It has cultural-historical significance as an example of a social-economic and spiritual development, namely the strengthening of the role of Catholicism in society in the interwar period, expressed in the appreciation for the beatified Peerke Donders from Tilburg.
