Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The Art Nouveau building was constructed as a TOWNHOUSE in 1899-1900 to the design of architect Jan van der Valk for the industrialist family F.M. Sträter-Bogaers. The building has been subdivided into apartments. The window arrangements and interior have been simplified accordingly.
Description
The two- to three-storey building has an approximately rectangular plan and a composite roof with red tuile-du-Nord tiles. The facades are constructed of machine-made brick with many decorative elements of ashlar. The front facade has a three-part division created by differences in gutter height and detailing. The left section has an ashlar parapet running down to the window sill and a large arched window. The downpipe runs along the left side of the wall and is enclosed in the parapet by a decorative Art Nouveau relief with floral whiplash motifs. On the storey above the arched window there are two sash windows under a lintel. All windows are provided with worked ashlar sills and lintels or arches. The projecting gutter line rests on consoles. In the roof plane a roof dormer under a catslide roof. The middle facade section is three storeys, with a lower ashlar plinth.
On the ground floor there are two sash windows under a segmental arch. The ashlar mullion between these windows flows smoothly into the ashlar cill of the three-sided balcony on the storey above. The cill is provided with Art Nouveau decoration with dragon and bat figures. The parapet has ashlar corner blocks and between the brick decorative brickwork there are polychrome glazed relief blocks. Above these come double doors with a fanlight and side lights. To the right of these a composite window turning the corner. The facade steps back from this point. In this rounded corner is an ashlar recess for a flagpole and a narrow corner window. The lintel above this transitions into a square base for a tower with a four-sided pavilion roof with slate shingles and cresting. Below the gutter line on consoles hereof glazed relief blocks are set in. To the left of this tower is a loggia under a catslide roof. The arched doors and side lights are screened by an open brick segmental arch balustrade. Both facade sections are placed under a gabled roof with the ridge parallel to the street. The roof pitch of the middle three-storey section is less steep than on the left. The hipped roof of the right section slopes steeply down. The right facade section steps back but is partially brought back to the building line by the portico overhung with a balcony in the angle with the centre projection. To the right of this two sash windows under a segmental arch, both storey windows under a lintel. Beside the windows is the water connection recess in the wall with an edging in a wavy outline.
The portico has a landing with open segmental arch balustrade and a terrazzo floor with marble mosaic. A brick corner pier carries the balcony. Incorporated in this is a foundation stone with the text: "Primus lapis positus M & J & J Strater XVIII MDCCCLXXXXIX". The varnished double leaf door is provided with ornamental wrought iron fittings and three small panes with wrought iron grilles, below which is carved work with small trees. A curved three-part fanlight with leaded glass illuminates the hall beyond.
The balcony with asymmetrical wrought iron balustrade rests on the asymmetrical arches and the corner pier with streamlined forms and corner finishing. A panel door under a lintel on the balcony is situated beneath the canopy with wood carving, which is created by the hipped roof above continuing further than the roof above the two windows to the right. The rear facade is hidden from view.
