Inleiding

WOONHUIS uit 1904, in de Art Nouveaustijl, gebouwd voor de textielhandelaar F. Hoosemans naar ontwerp van de architect J. van der Valk. Het huis ligt op een rechthoekig perceel in de lintbebouwde Poststraat.

Omschrijving

Tweelaags woonhuis onder zadeldak. De voorgevel is drie traveeën breed. In de middelste travee bevindt zich, in een ondiep portiek, de entree van het huis. Hiervoor liggen twee frontale hardstenen traptreden. Het voordeurkozijn heeft een eikenhouten paneeldeur met hardstenen kalf en twaalfruits roedenverdeling in het bovenlicht. In de deur eveneens een bovenlicht met een zesruits roedenverdeling met spiegelglas voorzien van facetranden. Smeedijzeren voordeurrooster met brievenklep.

Hierboven op de tweede bouwlaag bevindt zich een smal schuifvenster en in het dak een Vlaamse gevel met twee naar binnendraaiende ramen. De gevel wordt bekroond door twee hardstenen hoekpilasters. De linker travee heeft op de begane grond twee schuifvensters, die gescheiden worden door een smalle penant. Op de tweede bouwlaag bevindt zich een driezijdige houten erker, die gedragen wordt door smeedijzeren vakwerk consoles. De erker heeft aan de voorkant een T-vormig venster met draairamen en in het bovenlicht drie verticale roeden. Beide zijramen zijn schuifvensters. Boven op de erker in het dak een balkon met een smeedijzeren balustrade in de Art Nouveaustijl. Het balkon is bereikbaar via twee balkondeuren. De rechter travee heeft op de begane grond twee smalle schuifvensters, die gescheiden worden door een smalle penant. Op de tweede bouwlaag bevindt zich een loggia met een smeedijzeren balustrade in de Art Nouveaustijl. De loggia is bereikbaar via twee balkondeuren. Boven de deuren een bovenlicht. In het dak een kleine kapel onder lessenaarsdak.

In de bovenlichten van de vensters glas-in-lood in Art Nouveaustijl. Aan de achterkant heeft het huis een serre aan de woonkamer en een tweede aan de keuken. Boven de eerst genoemde serre bevindt zich een balkon dat gedeeltelijk een smeedijzeren balustrade heeft. Het opgaande werk bestaat uit een rode machinale baksteen gemetseld in kruisverband. Het metselwerk van de voorgevel wordt afgewisseld door hardstenen lateien en aanzetstenen. De pui van de voorgevel wordt gescheiden van het bovenliggende werk door een speklaag van een gele baksteen. Het metselwerk van de pui wordt bovendien afgewisseld door bruine geglazuurde speklagen. De gevel wordt aan de bovenkant afgesloten door houten bakgoten op gesneden gootklossen met eronder een fries van siermetselwerk van dezelfde bruine geglazuurde stenen. Het geheel staat op een hardstenen basement. Het interieur van het huis is vrijwel authentiek. Een lange gang met vestibule aan de straatkant verdeelt het huis op de begane grond in twee gedeelten. In het linkerdeel bevindt zich een kamer en suite gescheiden door vierdelige schuifdeuren voorzien van glas-in-lood in Art Nouveaustijl met daarin de tekst: "geen rozen zonder doornen". In het rechterdeel een voorkamer aan de straatkant, die bereikbaar is vanuit de vestibule. Hierachter bevindt zich in de gang een centraal trappenhuis dat de drie bouwlagen verbindt via rechte houten steektrappen met bordessen rond een vierkant schalmgat. Het trappenhuis heeft in de zijgevel aan de kant van de bordessen per bouwlaag driedelige vensters voorzien van glas-in-lood in Art Nouveaustijl. De trappen hebben een houten gesneden balustrade waarvan de hoekbalusters doorlopen over de drie bouwlagen. Achter het trappenhuis bevindt zich de keuken voorzien van een betegelde lambrizering van witte Art Nouveau facettegels. Meerkleurige tegelvloeren met repeterende patronen in gang en keuken. De benedenkamers hebben stucplafonds met Art Nouveau motieven evenals de glas-in-lood bovenlichten van de gangdeuren. Onder keuken en trappenhuis bevindt zich een grote kelder.

Waardering

Het woonhuis is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als voorbeeld van de sociaal-economische ontwikkeling, namelijk de bouw van fabrikantenwoonhuizen binnen de oude stedelijke structuur en als voorbeeld van de typologische ontwikkeling van het fabrikantenwoonhuis. Above this on the second storey there is a narrow sash window and in the roof a Flemish gable with two inward-opening windows. The facade is crowned by two sandstone corner pilasters. The left bay has two sash windows on the ground floor, separated by a narrow penant. On the second storey there is a three-sided wooden oriel, carried by wrought-iron framework consoles. The oriel has a T-shaped window with casement windows at the front and three vertical glazing bars in the fanlight. Both side windows are sash windows. Above the oriel in the roof a balcony with a wrought-iron balustrade in the Art Nouveau style. The balcony is accessible via two balcony doors. The right bay has two narrow sash windows on the ground floor, separated by a narrow penant. On the second storey there is a loggia with a wrought-iron balustrade in the Art Nouveau style. The loggia is accessible via two balcony doors. Above the doors a fanlight. In the roof a small chapel under a lean-to roof.

The masonry of the front wall is furthermore interspersed with brown glazed courses. The facade is finished at the top by wooden rainwater gutters on carved gutter blocks with beneath them a frieze of decorative brickwork of the same brown glazed stones. The whole stands on a sandstone basement. The interior of the house is virtually authentic. A long hallway with a vestibule on the street side divides the house on the ground floor into two sections. In the left section there is a room en suite separated by four-part sliding doors fitted with leaded glass in Art Nouveau style with the text: "no roses without thorns". In the right section a front room on the street side, which is accessible from the vestibule. Behind this there is in the hallway a central stairwell that connects the three storeys via straight wooden flight stairs with landings around a square stair opening. The stairwell has three-part windows in the side wall on the side of the landings per storey fitted with leaded glass in Art Nouveau style. The stairs have a carved wooden balustrade of which the corner balusters run through all three storeys. Behind the stairwell is the kitchen fitted with tiled wainscoting of white Art Nouveau facetted tiles. Multicoloured tile floors with repeating patterns in the hallway and kitchen. The ground-floor rooms have stucco ceilings with Art Nouveau motifs as well as the leaded glass fanlights of the hallway doors. Beneath the kitchen and stairwell there is a large cellar.

Valuation

The residential house is of general interest. It has cultural-historical value as an example of socio-economic development, namely the construction of manufacturer residences within the old urban structure and as an example of the typological development of the manufacturer residence.
