Omschrijving
Inleiding.
Voormalig GESTICHT "St.

Description
Introduction.
Former INSTITUTION "St. Ignatius" in Neo-Classical manner from 1842 with extensions in 1855 and 1911. In local parlance called "Huize 't Goirke". On 25 July 1842 approval was granted by H. den Dubbelden, bishop of 's-Hertogenbosch, for the construction of the institution. The institution was directed by the Tilburg convent congregation the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady Mother of Mercy. In the city this is the first centre for social services. Originally only for destitute elderly men and later also for women. Contractor P. Blomjous receives the assignment to erect the building for f. 11364,-. On 11 August 1842 the first stone is laid by pastor W. van der Ven. On 1 May it is put into use. The following day the institution is solemnly consecrated by bishop J. Zwijsen. The original construction consists of a square form with an open inner courtyard. With the extension on the west side in 1855 with two wings towards the street, an open courtyard to the street is created in front of the closed square. In the left wing is the chapel. In 1911 the square on the rear or east side is enlarged with two wings. The building has been given residential use.
Description.
The institution has, with the exception of the chapel, two storeys with an attic storey under composite hipped roofs with two spout gables to the street. The front facades are symmetric in layout. The plastered spout gables to the street have corner pilasters and blind recesses in both storeys and oculi at the top of the spout. The five bays wide middle wing with the open courtyard to the street contains a plastered projecting entrance section, in the roof provided with a tympanum with round window. Round-arch windows on the ground floor and in the chapel. The round-arch windows on the ground floor have a six-pane glazing and in the fanlight a forked tracery. The remaining windows have a six-pane glazing. On the roof of the chapel a wooden bell turret. The roofs are covered with grey Old Dutch tiles. The facing work consists of red hand-formed brick laid in cross-bond. The facades have a sandstone plinth and a cement frieze with cornice. The former chapel, with projecting entrance section to the open courtyard, consists of one aisle and has a stuccoed barrel vault and high-placed round-arch windows.
Valuation.
The former institution is of general interest. It has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of the development of social care by Catholic congregations in the early nineteenth century and as an early example of the typological development of convents and institutions. It has architectural-historical value as an example of the application of simple Neo-Classical forms. It has ensemble values as part of a larger whole, the linear built-up Goirkestraat, which is of national importance in cultural-historical, architectural-historical and urban planning terms. It is of value because of the architectural integrity of the exterior.
