Inleiding
KAPEL met verbindingsgangen, onderdeel van het voormalig INTERNAAT Sint Vincentius voor verstandelijk gehandicapten, thans zorgcentrum. De kapel werd aanzienlijk later gebouwd dan het hoofdgebouw naar ontwerpen van het bureau J.J.M. van Halteren. De inzegening vond plaats in 1935. Het gebouw is door gangen verbonden met het hoofdgebouw, een dispositie die een variant is van de opzet van het Instituut voor Doven te Sint-Michielsgestel.
Omschrijving
De driebeukige kapel is opgetrokken uit baksteen, heeft overhoekse steunberen en wordt afgedekt met zadeldaken met verbeterde Hollandse pannen en op de viering een slanke, vierzijdige met koper beklede dakruiter. Het schip heeft een iets smallere en lagere voorbouw, via onderkelderde gangen verbonden met het hoofdgebouw, en telt vier traveëen. Het transept heeft twee vakken en het koor heeft een vijfzijdige sluiting. Om de kerk heen lopen smalle, plat afgedekte zijbeuken. Deze hebben per travee boven de brede openingen van het souterrain telkens drie gekoppelde lancetramen. De lichtbeuk van het schip heeft dezelfde ramen. De voorbouw heeft een rozetraam en een rondboogdeur. De transeptarmen hebben rozetramen boven groepen van gekoppelde lichten.
Het inwendige is geheel overwelfd met bakstenen graatgewelven en heeft figuratief glas-in-lood, beelden van Jozef en Maria en de kruiswegstaties behouden. De verbindingsgangen met het hoofdgebouw zijn opgetrokken uit baksteen en afgedekt met platte daken met een smalle overstek. De gang heeft een souterrain en wordt verlicht door twee aan twee gekoppelde spitsboogramen.
Waardering
De kapel met verbindingsgangen is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van de zorg voor geestelijk gehandicapten door katholieke congregaties. Ook bij de typologische vernieuwing van dergelijke gebouwen in het interbellum, bleven kapellen een belangrijk onderdeel. Het gebouw heeft architectuurhistorische waarde als voorbeeld van de wijze waarop de architect breekt met de neogotiek. Het is tevens een markant voorbeeld van de toepassing van verstrakte motieven van de Amsterdamse School. CHAPEL with connecting passages, component of the former BOARDING SCHOOL Sint Vincentius for intellectually disabled people, now a care centre. The chapel was built considerably later than the main building to designs by the office J.J.M. van Halteren. Consecration took place in 1935. The building is connected to the main building by passages, a disposition which is a variant of the layout of the Institute for the Deaf at Sint-Michielsgestel.
Description
The three-aisle chapel is erected in brick, has diagonal buttresses and is covered with gabled roofs with improved Dutch tiles and on the crossing a slender, four-sided copper-clad roof turret. The nave has a slightly narrower and lower vestibule, connected via underground passages to the main building, and has four bays. The transept has two sections and the choir has a pentagonal closure. Around the church run narrow, flat-covered side aisles. These have per bay above the broad basement openings three times coupled lancet windows. The clerestory of the nave has the same windows. The vestibule has a rose window and a round-arched door. The transept arms have rose windows above groups of coupled lights.
The interior is completely vaulted with brick herringbone vaults and has figurative leaded windows, statues of Joseph and Mary and the stations of the cross retained. The connecting passages with the main building are erected in brick and covered with flat roofs with a narrow overhang. The passage has a basement and is lit by pairs of pointed-arch windows.
