Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
MAIN BUILDING of the former BOARDING SCHOOL Sint Vincentius for intellectually disabled people, now a care centre, erected in Amsterdam School style, with motifs of the Transitional style. The foundation stone was laid on 16 June 1928, after part of the side wings had been built from 1927. The design of the building, consecrated on 22 May 1930, was by the Den Bosch office of J.J.M. van Halteren, the house architect of the sisters of the Choorstraat. The central section of the main building consists of an entrance with tower, the adjoining four bays to the left and right and the concluding, semi-circular built-out corner projections. The building was renovated in 1987.
Description
The main building is enclosed between side wings and has three storeys on the front and four storeys on the back above a basement. It is erected in red brick on a sub-structure of grey brick, using decorative concrete finished with shells. It has a central tower with concrete construction and cupola and gabled roofs covered with improved Dutch tiles and flat roofs on the rear. The central projection forms the sub-structure of the tall tower and is flanked by two semi-circular tower-like projections rising from a square sub-structure with spheres on the corners. These projections are identical to those on the corners of the main building and have horizontal window strips with narrow, vertical glazing bars. The windows on the first and second floors in all four projections were enlarged after 1945. Between the projections a broad landing with stairs between half-cylindrical walls covered with granite covering plates, surmounted with spheres and with wrought-iron ornaments and lanterns on the corners. The entrance has been altered and provided with a recent canopy. Above the entrance narrow windows and an image of Vincentius under a baldachin. Above this the name Vincentius. The tower is enclosed by and partly rises from two pilasters that carry corner lisenes. Between the lisenes soaring, three-part window strips and above these under the copper-clad cupola square clock faces with copper numerals. The tower also served as a water tower.
The long facades of the building have altered, three-part windows in the basement and above this per bay broad windows with below three and above five panes, the upper ones with broader wooden framing. The facades are finished with broad drip mouldings. In the roof planes to the left and right two narrow roof dormers. The corner projections are identical to the projections of the central section. The pilaster rising above it was later doubled on the right side. The rear facade is more soberly detailed and has flat roofs. The central tower also rises here from a central projection with narrow pilasters on the corners. Ahead of this is a broad exterior staircase, above which the vertical window section of the stairwell. The wings to the left and right have alternating narrow and broad bays in an a b a b a b a rhythm. The windows in the broad sections are identical to those of the front facade, those in the narrow sections have a two-pane division below and above.
Internally the building has been modernized. The stairwell with straight-run stairs retains original tiles and a leaded window with figure of Christ, reminiscent of the wartime relocation during the Second World War of pupils from the advanced junior seminary Beekvliet from Sint-Michielsgestel. The clock mechanism in the tower is from Eijsbouts from Asten.
Assessment
The building is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as a distinctive expression of care for intellectually disabled people by Catholic congregations and as an example of the typological renewal of such buildings in the interwar period. It has architectural-historical value as an example of the way the architect breaks with neo-Gothic and adapts to changed views on care for the mentally disabled. It is also a striking example of the application of abstracted motifs of the Amsterdam School, in particular in the visually defining tower composition. It has ensemble value because of its location on one of the 'cross streets' which formed the old centre of Udenhout. It has remained externally intact and is rare in terms of formal language and detailing for a Catholic institution.
