Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The SCHOOL was built as the St. Theresialyceum in 1931. The architect of this Expressionistic building was Jos Donders. Today the building is known under the name St. Jozefmavo. Originally the school was directly connected to the building mass of the Motherhouse. Since 1991 the connecting three-storey section has been removed, partly in favour of an entrance to the city park, partly for the construction of a new gymnasium.
Description
The three-storey building has an L-shaped ground plan and is constructed of machine-made brick with decorative brickwork. The roofs are flat. The eastern front facade is aligned with Van Doorenstraat and is characterised by an almost closed front. The ground floor has as a plinth mainly a horizontal articulation. This can be seen in the recessed brick courses and in the continuous concrete lintel and awning above the entrance in the middle. To the left of the entrance two two-light windows, to the right four coupled six-light windows. The windows are provided with steel glazing bars. The simple double doors are flanked by a curved section with plateaus for plant boxes adjacent. On the left a façade stone, now unreadable, is mortared in. The curved section has relief brickwork and extends over the full height of the facade. Between these, above the entrance, is a semi-circular bay window with steel glazing bars. The upper part is flat: a mortared cross between the decorative brickwork crowns the bay. On either side of this central section above the ground floor the facade has undulating brickwork. These waves run out on each side into five tiers of windows placed in the facade between pilasters. The windows on the right still have a stained-glass filling. Between the white concrete string course above and the projecting wooden gutter line, a meander border in relief brickwork is visible. The northern side facade has eight bays with large steel windows in sixteen-light glazing bars. The lower part is open, the upper part has hopper windows. The windows of the classrooms have concrete lintels. The southern side facade has, besides the windows of the classrooms, in the first bay slot windows between pilaster strips. Behind this is the stairwell. In the corner between the front building and the rear section there is on the ground floor an empty post-war niche. To the right of the front facade is a single-storey section under a flat roof, provided with a three-light window and the section standing at right angles to the front building is likewise three storeys but has a lower storey height, as a result of which the roofline is lower. The section is four bays deep and ten window axes long. On the southwestern corner stands a slender brick chimney with a concrete cap. The windows have the same form as the main building. In the rear facade are three double doors placed. The interior has a draught porch. Above this, in the curvature of the bay window, an image of St. Joseph with Child. The corridor runs in the middle with classrooms on both sides. All rooms have been modernised. The half-transparent bay window illuminates the corridor of all storeys. The public space possesses authentic components. The mentioned bay window is on each floor separated by an iron decorative railing with spiral scrolls. The floors of the corridors are tiled in matt beige with a grey border. The wall cladding consists of glossy glazed soft-yellow tiles with five narrow black decorative borders and a broad black finishing strip. The junction at the floor is rounded, for better hygiene. The ceilings of the corridors are reinforced with concrete beams with bevelled sides.
To the left of the front door is a corridor that leads to the broad stairwell. The grand staircase is executed in granito. The handrail is of wood, the iron balustrade has sober geometric decoration.
Valuation
The school is of general interest. The building has cultural-historical importance as an example of socio-economic and cultural development, in particular the foundation and growth of Catholic congregations and their care for education and charity, reflected in the gradual expansion of the complex, which is also of importance as an example of the typological development of the congregation cloisters. The object is a good example of technical and typological development. The property is architecturally valuable because of the style and the place in the oeuvre of the architect. The building is an essential part of the larger cloister complex and of special significance for the appearance of the city. The school building is important because of the architectural integrity of the interior and exterior.
