Inleiding

Introduction

WARD with nuns' choir of the former convent of the Sisters of the Visitation (Visitandines). Built in the last quarter of the nineteenth century in Neo-Gothic style, presumably according to designs by A.G.M. de Beer. Originally, there was internally a relationship with the chapel from which one could follow the service in the chapel. This relationship has now been broken. Part of the masonry of the short rear facade was renewed in 1966 according to designs by the architect J. Donders.

Description

Two-storey brick building mass, on a composite floor plan under a composite roof covered with slates. The roof consists of gabled roofs placed at right angles to each other. The facades have courses in black stone, below the gutter a block dentil course is applied. The facade on the ground floor is provided with pointed-arch windows. On the upper storey pointed-arch windows with arched glazing bars are placed in pointed-arch niches.

Below is located the former enclosed section of the chapel, from which the sisters could follow the services in the chapel. This has wainscoting, panelled doors and a ceiling with barrel vaults, resting on three times two iron columns. Above this is located approximately a dozen cells and originally a small choir with grilles from which the sick could follow the mass. Both connections are temporarily sealed, but the grilles were retained.

Valuation

The building is of general importance because of its cultural-historical values. It is of cultural-historical importance as a representative of the development of Catholic congregations in the nineteenth century. It is a good and recognizable example of the typological development of the congregational convent. It has ensemble value, it is an essential part of the convent chapel.
