Omschrijving

Introduction

CHAPEL of the former convent of the Sisters of the Visitation (Visitandines). Built in the last quarter of the nineteenth century in Neo-Gothic style, presumably according to designs by A.G.M. de Beer.

Description

The brick chapel has a rectangular plan beneath a gabled roof, covered with slates. The nave is four bays long. The choir is slightly narrower and higher and closed with three sides.

The object has a slightly projecting brick plinth and at the top of the side elevations a brick frieze with herringbone arches. On the roof a square roof lantern crowned by a square spire, rotated a quarter turn in relation to the tower.

In the centre of the front elevation, which is divided into three by narrow buttresses, a hinged wooden door with wrought-iron fittings has been placed. The door has a pointed-arch-shaped fanlight, filled with leaded glass. Both are framed by moulded brick and crowned by a gable. In it is a plastered field with a representation of the Sacred Heart in low relief. In the centre of the gable elevation is a rose window with white, plastered quatrefoil as frame. The gable elevation is provided with a stepped frieze and is crowned by a natural stone cross. On the left at the corner stands a slender hexagonal staircase tower with spire and piring and offset in relation to each other narrow leaded glass windows have been installed. The upper articulation has a projecting moulded brick edge. Above are pointed-arch windows with leaded glass.

The left side elevation has buttresses cut once. Per bay a pointed-arch window with leaded glass has been placed on wide natural stone plinths. Against the left side of the choir is a single-storey block-shaped extension under a hipped roof. The side elevation has a slightly projecting plinth, the elevation is articulated by pilaster strips and is provided with a block-dentil cornice. In the elevation are placed composite pointed-arch windows. The choir has a frieze with herringbone arches and except for a tripartite pointed-arch window in the side elevation is entirely blind.

In the interior the original condition has been preserved. The walls are plastered and in the centre provided with a band. Per bay pilaster strips have been applied. The chapel has panel doors. In the right-hand section there is a staircase. On the left the sacristy is located. The neo-gothic altar and the leaded glass windows are still present.
