Inleiding

Introduction

The Church of Saints Dionysius and Anthony of Padua was built between 1923 and 1924 according to a design by architect Ed. Cuypers. The church is known locally by the name Korvelse kerk. The style is related both to Neo-Romanesque and to Expressionism. The interior contains church furniture from the predecessor of this church.

Description

The three-aisled church has a T-shaped plan provided with a partially built-in tower and roof turret. The façades are constructed of machine-made brick and the gabled roofs are covered with slate in overlapping courses. The nave comprises five bays, the broad transept has two chapels in the corners; the choir bay has a lower and closed-off choir and niches for the side altars. The tower has three storeys. The entrance consists of a rounded-arch portal with terracotta fan shapes. The storey is terminated by a moulding with terracotta panels with symbolic representations including an anchor, a ship, a Sacred Heart and the Hand of God. Above this a tall storey with a cross-shaped light opening, above which slit windows, partly coupled in groups of three. An overhanging brick moulding with wrought-iron ornamental balustrade forms the transition to the octagon which has horizontal mouldings and rectangular sound holes. Above this are clock faces and the symbols of the evangelists, by J. Custers. The tower is crowned by a curved melon-shaped octagonal spire with a weathervane. On either side of the tower narrow windows and in the corners two small rounded-arch entrances. The side aisles, under a half-hipped roof, are lit by semicircular windows. The rectangular confessionals are projected outward and have a flat roof. The clerestory has per bay three coupled rectangular windows between lesenes with an offset. In the roof truss structure there are triangular windows. The transept has large rounded-arch windows with nine-part rounded-arch tracery of red sandstone. The roof turret has, like the tower, a melon-shaped little spire. The interior is that of a broad spacious parish church in which every believer has a view of the altar. The plastered barrel vaults of the nave, the side aisles, transept and choir rest on square piers clad with brown tiles. These have a cube-shaped capital of granite with reliefs featuring among other things grapes and peacocks. The walls are clad with square tiles in dark red colour, with gold-coloured consecration crosses and embedded ceramic holy water basins. With the exception of the choir, the floors have been renewed. The choir has a floor with dark red and black tiles. On the right choir pier there is a foundation stone with the text: "me posuit J. van Gelder parochus die XXVI julii MCMXXIII". On the other side are the names H.E.A.L. van Dooren, J. Graafmans, H.G.K.F. Diepen and J.J.J. van Oudenhoven.

The organ gallery and the worked piers on which it rests are of wood. Along the sides of the nave four projected confessionals with wooden figures of penitent saints, such as Peter with the rooster. These figures were made by H. van der Geld. The Stations of the Cross from 1891 are also from his hand. The groups are of plaster and executed in polychrome high relief. Between the stations are tile tableaux with flowers and fruits. Apart from the groups mentioned above there are more components from the previous church in the current one. Particular is the oak pulpit by J. Oor from 1886. On the bowl are carved representations of the four evangelists. The baptismal font is from W.H. Haan. Against the choir wall there is a mosaic with the Crucifixion from 1924, made in the workshop of A. Hermans. Nearby are several figures of St Anthony of Padua in the church, to whom a separate chapel is also dedicated with paintings by Luc van Hoek from 1941. Above the main entrance this saint is depicted in stained glass from 1928-1929. The entire church is provided with figurative stained-glass windows from different periods. The majority was designed by A. Hermans and dates from the years 1928-1929. Examples include among others a semicircular window with St Vincent, the Dove of the Holy Spirit and the aforementioned Anthony. Others were made among others by Luc van Hoek between 1940 and 1948. Striking are the large windows in the transept, with the Ascension of Christ by Luc van Hoek and Mary with Child by A. Hermans. After the Second World War the interior of the church was expanded with a Mary altar from 1949 and wall paintings.

Valuation

The church is of general interest. The building has cultural-historical significance as an example of the development of Catholicism and the construction or reconstruction of churches within the existing older urban structure; it is also of typological significance as an example of the development of the parish church in the interwar period. It has architectural-historical value because of its style and ornamentation and is also of significance as an example of church-building concepts within the office of Ed. Cuypers. It is also of art-historical significance as a showcase of ecclesiastical art. The complex has ensemble value because of its setting, linked with the development of the district. The complex is valuable because of the integrity of interior and exterior and in relation to the structural and visual integrity of the urban environment, particularly Korvelplein.
