Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
In 1940 the work to connect the Beatrixkanaal to the Wilhelminakanaal was completed. The construction of the Beatrixkanaal also made it possible to discharge surplus water from the Dommel via both canals. For this purpose a SLUICE GATE was built at locks I, II and IV.
Description
To the south of the lock chamber is the sluice gate, consisting of a two-stage concrete sluice basin connected to the canal by means of a broad branch. The mouth is sealed off by means of mooring posts. At the head of the sluice basin two closed concrete hoist towers containing the electric motors for operating the riveted steel gate. On the east side an outlet has been installed in the upper part of the hoist towers. The gate between the towers is connected via Gallé chains to the counterweights in the hoist towers. On the hoist towers, above the sluice basin, are small steel balconies on which a pendulum apparatus for manual operation of the gate is mounted. On the west side of the hoist towers a renovated metal door. In front of the hoist towers, double sheet pile walls have been installed in the walls of the sluice basin.
The second stage in the sluice basin consists of a fixed weir with a pier in the middle. In this pier and the walls of the sluice basin a double sheet pile wall. The sluice discharges into a lower concrete basin which is lined with basalt at the transition to the canal.
Valuation
The sluice gate is of general interest.
Cultural-historical values: the object is important as an expression of a particular typological development making use of standardised designs. Ensemble values: the object is also important as an essential component of a larger whole composed of various components which have a functional relationship. The ensemble value also applies because of the relationship the complex has with a larger whole that forms part of the infrastructure in the South. Integrity: the ensemble value is further enhanced by the still present original construction and the structural and visual integrity of the entire complex and the object. The complex is the last intact example of this type in the Wilhelminakanaal.
