Inleiding

Introduction

The LOCK (Lock III) was built in 1917. Since the gradient west of Tilburg was considerable, a coupled two-stage bayonet lock was chosen here, as was also the case with Lock I at Oosterhout. Although the development of electric motors was still ongoing, all locks in the Wilhelmina Canal were provided with such motors for the operation of the locks and the circulation channels. Operation was controlled from the control house, which was always positioned centrally next to the lock.

Description

The navigation lock consists of two coupled bayonet locks with upper, lower and intermediate gates. To bridge the large gradient, such as occurs west of Tilburg in the Wilhelmina Canal, the lock was designed as a two-stage lock. The lock gates, constructed largely in brickwork, are all provided with granite striking posts in block bond. The corners of the gate recesses are also executed in granite. On the entrance sides the gates are furthermore provided with granite coping stones. The remaining parts of the lock gates are provided with cast steel striking posts. In all lock gates there are mortared recesses for the removable stop plank closure, double-sided at the lower gate ends, single-sided at the upper gate ends. Between the double recesses are steel hauling pockets with hauling pins. The lock gates are all provided with wooden leaf gates (renewed 1961-1962) for which gate recesses are cut in the gates. On the gates a catwalk with obliquely placed railing. The gates are provided with cast steel yoke brackets connected by rods to panama wheels driven by electric motors. These panama wheels are located in the pavement along the lock chamber. The recesses in which the wheels are located are closed by steel shutters.

In the lock gate of the lower end, two hardstone blocks are placed on either side of the lock opening with the inscriptions 'ANNO' and '1917' in relief. The lock chamber walls are constructed with basalt blocks and have curved corners. Cast steel hauling pockets with hauling pins are installed in the walls at two levels. Steel ladders are also located on both sides of the lock chamber, which are set into the lock wall. The recesses of the ladders are provided with cast steel mouldings. Narrow steel doors in granite frames are also positioned one above the other in the walls. These are probably cable gutters. At the top the lock walls are provided with concrete coping stones with cast steel striking posts. Tiled pavements run along the lock chambers, which are connected by means of granite steps due to the level difference. A large number of fixed bollards are placed in the pavements.

At each lock gate there is a bollard provided with a vertical rotating shaft which can be driven by means of an electric motor. The filling and emptying of the lock chambers takes place via circulation channels which are built into the mortared lock walls: these can be closed using electrically operated cylinder valves. At the rotating bollards described above there are also circular steel cover plates for the sheet steel pipes in which the electrically operated cylinder valves are placed to control the circulation channels. In front of the gates the canal opening has been widened and lined with basalt blocks. Fender works and mooring bollards are placed in front of the lock entrance. At the lower gate, in the canal embankment on the north side, is the concrete inlet head of the switchhouse (see component 3 for a further description).

Valuation

The lock is of general interest. Cultural-historical values: the object is significant as a remarkable expression of a socio-economic and technological development.

Ensemble values and integrity: the object is particularly significant because of the intact, original condition in which it remains, also considering the coherence with the other equally original components of the complex. It thus forms the last intact example of this type of lock complex dating from the period when the Wilhelmina Canal was constructed.
