Inleiding

Introduction

The WATER TOWER belonging to the water tower complex was built in 1909 according to a design by engineer Roelof Kuipers (Den Haag). It is a 26.30 metre high water tower with a concrete skeleton. The construction of the tower was carried out by N.V. Koninklijke Betonijzer-Maatschappij, f/h van Waning en Co. and has a concrete flat-bottomed reservoir with a capacity of 100 m³. The tower constructed in reinforced concrete belongs to the first concrete water towers in the Netherlands and is of the same type as the slightly later built tower of Rijswijk (1911). The tower of Vianen, constructed in a Functionalist building style, is the oldest water tower for the drinking water supply in the Netherlands with an open load-bearing structure of reinforced concrete.

Description

The concrete tower stands on a square, likewise concrete base structure with flat roof, which served as a fitters' workshop and switching room. Below this is a cellar which was fitted out as a machine room. The open tower shaft is octagonal with in the middle a round standpipe. The octagonal lower part of the reservoir is provided with a walkway, the round upper part has a conical roof. The former fitters' workshop is constructed from a square floor plan. All facades are vertically articulated by two of the eight legs of the tower shaft. The front facade (south side) contains above a concrete staircase a round-arched door. Above this is the coat of arms of the municipality of Vianen executed in relief in a shield with crown and the inscription 'ANNO 1909'. The east facade contains three casement windows, the west facade two. The lower rear facade is executed almost blind and contains only a double casement door below ground level. The space for the double door is as it were a large cuckoo with vertically standing concrete walls and sloping talus slopes clad with pavement tiles. The open construction of the tower shaft is composed of eight load-bearing legs, which are connected to each other by cross-connections (coupling beams). The rigidity of the structure is increased by connecting it from the middle connection crosses with the round standpipe (with iron ladder, and inlet and outlet pipes of the reservoir) by means of coupling beams, which together form a star-shaped coupling. The load-bearing structure forms the base of the reservoir section. This is constructed from a circular base plate (leakage floor) with an octagonal iron balustrade around the walkway. The masonry casing of the reservoir has an octagonal underside with bevelled corners in spandrels. In one of the northern facade segments is a casement door. The round top of the reservoir casing has likewise a round 'lantern' on the slightly sloping conical roof. In the INTERIOR of the fitters' room the cast-iron railing around the stairwell of the machine room (cellar) is of importance. The machine room is provided with a tiled floor and still contains parts of the three pumps. The round standpipe contains an iron ladder to the reservoir and an inlet and an outlet pipe, which are connected with the reservoir. The reservoir is provided with an insulating half-brick cavity wall with plasterwork.

Valuation

The water tower is of general importance due to cultural-historical value, architectural-historical value, urban planning/ensemble value, integrity and rarity:

- as a distinctive expression of the history of the drinking water supply in the Netherlands in general and of the region in particular.

- due to the characteristic design related to the function, due to the building-technical qualities and because it is the oldest still existing water tower of this type in the Netherlands.

- due to its special meaning as a landmark and orientation point and as such is also important for the silhouette of the village.

- due to recognisability and integrity.

- due to the materials used and the construction method employed
