Inleiding

Introduction

AFFUIT SHED for the storage of cannon carriages, built in 1866 within the fortress and naval harbour at Hellevoetsluis. After the ditch on the east side was filled in, the shed came to be located on the Opzoomerlaan. The shed was built at the same time as the wet gunpowder shed standing at approximately one hundred metres distance in an Eclectic style, in which Neo-Classical stylistic elements predominate. As a result of new construction between the sheds, the visual relationship between the two buildings has been somewhat disrupted. In the nineteen-eighties a door section was added to the west gable during the construction of a mosque in the southern half of the shed. The northern half of the shed is now in use as storage space for the fire brigade museum.

Description

The elongated affuit shed is oriented north-south and adjoins directly on the west side of the Opzoomerlaan. A ramp is located in front of the north gable, and car parks lie along the other gables. The building has a rectangular floor plan and comprises one storey under a gabled roof covered with bonded Dutch tiles. This roof is supported by wrought and cast-iron triangular roof trusses, which are boarded over with planks. The roof section is provided with simply moulded wooden gable boards and gutters. The gables, laid in red brickwork in header bond, are enlivened only by hard stone plinth and closing stones, the latter with diamond point. These arched stones are arranged in semi-circular arches in which double hinged wooden wagon doors are hung. In the semi-circular spandrels, without hard stone plinth and closing stones, windows with cast-iron pivoting casements and radial glazing bars are fitted. In the end gables circular windows with spoke-like glazing bars are located at the top. These gables are provided with braiding along the roof edge.

The symmetrical front gable (south side) is two bays wide and provided with double hinged wagon doors. The top is provided with a circular window.

The symmetrical rear gable is identical to the front gable.

The symmetrical left side gable comprises seventeen bays, all provided with identical semi-circular arches. Wagon doors are fitted in the fifth, ninth and thirteenth bays, in the remaining bays circular arch windows are located. The doors in the ninth bay have been altered as a result of the installation of an entrance to the mosque.

The symmetrical right side gable is virtually identical to the left side gable. On the closing stone in the ninth bay the year 1866 is inscribed.

Valuation

The affuit shed is of general importance because of its cultural-historical, architectural-historical and ensemble value.

- The shed is of cultural-historical importance because of its special function, as a recognisable and reasonably intact example of an affuit shed which forms part of a historically important naval harbour.

- The shed is of architectural-historical value as an example of an eclectic building style, in which the combination of brickwork and Neo-Classical formal language is characteristic.

- The shed has ensemble value as part of the fortress Hellevoetsluis, in which several buildings commemorate the military function of the area. The relationship with the wet gunpowder shed built at the same time is also important.
