Inleiding
SCHOOLGEBOUW (Van Reenenschool) met bijbehorende ERFSCHEIDING in kubistisch expressionistische trant uit 1931, gebouwd naar ontwerp van de architect J.H. Roggeveen. De school is gesitueerd op de hoek van het Spaansepad en de Maesdammerlaan.
Omschrijving
Het schoolgebouw telt één bouwlaag op een nagenoeg L-vormige plattegrond onder haaks op elkaar aansluitende hoge zadeldaken met rode Hollandse pannen. De overgang naar het zadeldak boven de iets verhoogde hoekpartij wordt geaccentueerd door een overhoeks geplaatste gemetseld torentje met luiklok. De gevels zijn boven een zwarte plint wit gesausd. De grote vensters van de lokalen zijn samengesteld uit vier zesruits ramen met drieruits bovenlichten en daaronder vier kleine stalen vensters met openslaande ramen tussen gemetselde muurdammetjes. De grote rechthoekige stalen vensters van de gang zijn uitgevoerd met een 32-ruits roedenverdeling.
De entree bevindt zich rechts in de noordgevel van de lange vleugel langs het Spaansepad. De spitsboogvormige dubbele houten deur is uitgevoerd met zwaar decoratief smeedijzeren hang- en sluitwerk. Rondom de deur een in siermetselwerk uitgevoerde lijst met in de sluitsteen het wapen van Bergen. In de hoek naast de entree een in decoratief smeedwerk uitgevoerde vlaggestokhouder. Boven de deur een horizontaal stalen venster met 36-ruits roedenverdeling en in het dakschild een dakkapel. Rechts van de entreepartij is het dakschild verlengd en wordt ondersteund door twee zware gemetselde hoekkolommen. In de gevel onder het dakschild een vierdelig venster. Links van de ingang een doorlopende vensterstrook met elf vensters aan de gangzijde en een dubbele deur. Op de hoek een uitbouw onder dwarskap met in de puntgevel twee vensters.
In de oostgevel van de korte vleugel langs de Maesdammerlaan links een driezijdige erker en rechts een venster van een van de lokalen. Eenzelfde venster bevindt zich in de kopgevel van de korte vleugel (Z) met rechts daarvan een dubbele deur die vanuit de gang opent naar het schoolplein. In de westgevel van de korte vleugel rechts in de hoek drie vensters van de gangzijde. De zuidgevel van de lange vleugel bevat vijf vensters van de lokalen en in het dakschild een smalle dakkapel waarin vier gedeelde vensters. Bij de entrees tot het terrein langs het Spaansepad witgeschilderde gemetselde muurtjes en aan de zuidzijde wordt het oorspronkelijke schoolplein tussen de twee vleugels afgesloten door een in- en uitzwenkend muurtje.
Waardering
Het schoolgebouw met bijbehorende erfscheiding uit 1931 is van algemeen belang vanwege de architectuur- en cultuurhistorische waarde als gaaf typologisch voorbeeld van een schoolgebouw van het zg. 'gangtype', in kubistisch expressionistische bouwtrant. Het door een laag muurtje omgeven schoolgebouw is beeldbepalend gesitueerd op de hoek van het Spaansepad en de Maesdammerlaan.

Description
The school building comprises one storey on an approximately L-shaped ground plan beneath gabled roofs set at right angles to each other with red Dutch tiles. The transition to the gabled roof above the slightly raised corner section is accentuated by a masonry turret with bell gable placed diagonally across. The facades above a black plinth are whitewashed. The large windows of the classrooms are composed of four six-paned windows with three-paned fanlights and below them four small steel windows with casement windows between masonry mullions. The large rectangular steel windows of the corridor are fitted with a 32-paned glazing bar division.
The entrance is located on the right in the north facade of the long wing along the Spaansepad. The pointed-arch-shaped double wooden door is fitted with heavy decorative wrought iron hinges and fastening. Around the door a list executed in ornamental masonry with the coat of arms of Bergen in the keystone. In the corner next to the entrance a flagstaff holder executed in decorative wrought work. Above the door a horizontal steel window with 36-paned glazing bar division and in the roof panel a roof dormer. To the right of the entrance section the roof panel is extended and supported by two heavy masonry corner columns. In the facade below the roof panel a four-part window. To the left of the entrance a continuous window strip with eleven windows on the corridor side and a double door. At the corner an extension beneath a cross gable with two windows in the pointed gable.
In the east facade of the short wing along the Maesdammerlaan on the left a three-sided bay window and on the right a window of one of the classrooms. An identical window is located in the gable end of the short wing (S) with to the right of it a double door which opens from the corridor onto the schoolyard. In the west facade of the short wing on the right at the corner three windows on the corridor side. The south facade of the long wing contains five windows of the classrooms and in the roof panel a narrow roof dormer in which four divided windows. At the entrances to the site along the Spaansepad whitewashed masonry walls and on the south side the original schoolyard between the two wings is closed off by a swinging in and out wall.
Valuation
The school building with associated boundary wall from 1931 is of general importance on account of its architectural and cultural historical value as a well-preserved typological example of a school building of the so-called 'corridor type', in cubist expressionist building style. The school building, enclosed by a low wall, is a prominent landmark situated at the corner of the Spaansepad and the Maesdammerlaan.
