Inleiding
GEDENKNAALD uit 1923, opgericht ter nagedachtenis aan ingenieur Justus Dirks (1825-1886) die de technische leiding had bij de aanleg van het Noordzeekanaal. Het monument is ontworpen door de Haagse architect S. de Clercq in opdracht van een commissie uit de wereld van de scheepvaart en het bedrijfsleven. Op 28 september 1923 werd het onthuld op het Sluiseiland. Vanwege de ophoging van het Sluiseiland in verband met de Deltawet is het monument in 1963 afgebroken en vervolgens in 1971 heropgericht aan de Seinpostweg. Omdat het op deze plaats de aanleg van de derde zeehaven belemmert, zal het verplaatst worden naar het Sluisplein.
Omschrijving
Circa 12 m hoge gedenknaald van lichtgrijs graniet met een vierkante voet die via achteroverhellende vlakken gereduceerd wordt tot een kleiner grondvlak waarop een zich verjongende achtzijdige schacht bekroond door een halve bol. De ongepolijste schacht wordt verlevendigd door zeven banden van gepolijst donkergrijs graniet waarvan de bovenste uitkraagt. Tegen de westkant van het evenals de voet gepolijste onderste gedeelte van de schacht is een bronzen gedenkplaat bevestigd met het volgende opschrift: "HULDE/ AAN DE NAGEDACHTENIS VAN/ JUSTUS DIRKS/ HOOFDINGENIEUR 1ste KLASSE/ VAN DEN WATERSTAAT/ EERSTAANWEZEND INGENIEUR/ BIJ DE/ AMSTERDAMSCHE KANAAL MAATSCHAPPIJ/ AAN ZIJNE TECHNISCHE LEIDING/ IS HET NOORDZEEKANAAL/ VOOR EEN GROOT DEEL/ TE DANKEN./ BIJ TAL VAN ANDERE/ BELANGRIJKE WERKEN/ IN ONS LAND EN DAARBUITEN/ HEEFT HIJ EVENEENS/ DEN NAAM VAN DEN/ NEDERLANDSCHEN INGENIEUR/ HOOG GEHOUDEN/ 1825-1886". MEMORIAL from 1923, erected in memory of engineer Justus Dirks (1825-1886) who held the technical leadership in the construction of the North Sea Canal. The monument was designed by The Hague architect S. de Clercq on commission from a committee from the shipping and business world. On 28 September 1923 it was unveiled on the Sluiseiland. Because of the raising of the Sluiseiland in connection with the Delta Act, the monument was demolished in 1963 and subsequently re-erected in 1971 at the Seinpostweg. Because it hinders the construction of the third sea harbour at this location, it will be relocated to the Sluisplein.
Description
Approximately 12 m high memorial obelisk of light grey granite with a square base which is reduced via reclined planes to a smaller ground plan upon which an eight-sided shaft tapering upwards is crowned by a hemisphere. The unpolished shaft is enlivened by seven bands of polished dark grey granite, the uppermost of which cantilevers out. Against the west side of the likewise polished lower part of the shaft is affixed a bronze memorial plaque with the following inscription: "TRIBUTE/ TO THE MEMORY OF/ JUSTUS DIRKS/ CHIEF ENGINEER 1st CLASS/ OF THE WATER AUTHORITY/ SENIOR ENGINEER/ WITH THE/ AMSTERDAM CANAL COMPANY/ TO HIS TECHNICAL LEADERSHIP/ THE NORTH SEA CANAL/ IS FOR A GREAT PART/ INDEBTED./ IN MANY OTHER/ IMPORTANT WORKS/ IN OUR COUNTRY AND ABROAD/ HE LIKEWISE/ UPHELD THE REPUTATION OF THE/ DUTCH ENGINEER/ 1825-1886". The memorial obelisk is placed on a square floor of unpolished light grey granite with on all four corners a heavy spherical form executed in the same material with an eight-sided base.

The North Sea Canal monument is of general importance because of its cultural-historical value as a well-preserved and characteristic example of a memorial from the first quarter of the 20th century; as a point de vue; as a reminder of the construction of the North Sea Canal in general and its most important founder engineer Justus Dirks in particular.
