Inleiding

Dingmans.

Introduction

The MAIN BUILDING of the Duin en Kruidberg estate was realized between 1907 and 1909 according to a design by J.J. van Nieukerken and his sons M.A. and J. van Nieukerken. The architectural style of the main building is inspired by the architecture of the Dutch Renaissance and can therefore be described as neo-Dutch Renaissance. The realized building does however differ somewhat from the design drawing of 1907. The south side of the main building is, owing to its location by the pond and its relationship to the sight lines, the most important facade. The rich interior is, aside from the billiard room fitted out by an English firm, likewise largely designed by the Van Nieukerkens. Various artists collaborated on its execution, including the sculptors M. Hack (Amsterdam), A. Alexander (The Hague), L. Vreugde (Haarlem), and the Amsterdam ornamental ironsmith A.J. Dingmans. Various interior components from the villa Duin en Berg, which was demolished in 1909, were reused, notably the mantels and the wainscoting.

N.B. The underground hall complex (XXd) on the south side of the main building does not form part of the protected status.

Description

The main building of the Duin en Kruidberg estate is designed on a free floor plan that is oriented east-west. The main building consists predominantly of a basement, ground floor, one or two storeys and an attic storey with small roof dormers. The different volumes of the building are positioned asymmetrically with respect to each other, but the constituent components have, with one or two exceptions, a symmetrical facade composition. The composite roof of the main building consists of a primary east-west oriented gabled roof which is combined with north-south oriented gabled, hipped and tent roofs. The roof line is interrupted to the east and west by a tower. The tower on the east is crowned with a Flemish helm roof. The tower on the west side is lower than the tower on the east side. The roof is covered with slate in Dutch bond. The walls are built of red brick. On the facades, at the height where floor beams would normally be located, ornamental wall anchors have been placed. The form of the gable tops of the risalts originates from the combination of different types of Dutch stepped gables. The form that prevails in the design can be described as a combination of an offset-recessed stepped gable and a shoulder gable. The windows are mostly closed with shutters on which a green border is painted with within it a horizontal red-white hourglass motif. For the small roof dormers, shutters have been applied which are painted with a red-white butterfly motif. The small roof dormers are all crowned with a small spire. The large roof dormers on the attic storey are designed as the neck of a neck gable which is crowned with a curved pediment. The pediment is placed on a reduced rendering of the offset-recessed stepped gables of the risalts. The windows in the large roof dormer are predominantly windows with a wooden cross window whose lower half can be closed with two shutters. The shutters are decorated with the already mentioned hourglass motif. The remaining windows in the building are, with almost no exceptions, placed in a natural stone frame which is spanned by a natural stone lintel above which there is a relieving arch which is accentuated by the use of yellow brick. All windows in the main building are cross windows or sash windows with a multi-pane glazing bar division. The south side (pond side) can be divided into six vertical facade sections. Principal in the south facade are two risalts which are crowned with a composite stepped gable. The three facade planes to the left and right of the two risalts terminate in a large roof dormer. Above all this the towers rise up. Also on the south side of the building is a terrace which is bordered by a balustrade. The terrace has three principal entrances facing south which can be reached via the platform. The platform transitions after the boundary into a brick retaining wall. The most westerly part of the south facade begins at the tower on the roof. The tower consists of two building storeys rising above the roof, on which a tent roof is placed which has a square chimney at its highest point. The tent roof has a roof dormer on all sides. Directly below the roof gutter two series of two paired windows with shutters have been placed. On the storey below are two windows with sash windows. Subsequently the tower body disappears into the roof. The facade below this consists of an attic storey, storey and ground floor. On the attic storey a large roof dormer is placed with in it one window with fanlight which projects forward and a closing shutter for the window. On the storey are two windows with shutter and fanlight placed which flank a door with fanlight. The door provides access to the platform which is placed above the projecting ground floor. On the ground floor to the left is a window and to the right of it a window with shutters and cross mullion. The facade of the narrower risalt to the right lies in the same plane as the just mentioned recessed ground floor. The risalt consists of three building storeys. At the top the risalt has a cross window with shutters. On the storey are two cross windows with shutters. On the ground floor is a large recessed window. The third facade section recesses with respect to the facade of the risalt and consists of three building storeys. This facade section is on the attic storey adorned with a large roof dormer with balustrades and a roof dormer with flat roof on either side. On the storey are three windows with sash windows and on the ground floor two large windows with sash windows flank a Renaissance entrance bay with a door with a semicircular fanlight. The entrance bay above the door is crowned with a pediment with consoles below which is an elliptical window. The broad risalt to the right of this facade section has four building storeys. At the top is a cross window with shutters. On the second storey are three cross windows with shutters placed. On the first storey are three windows with sash windows. On the ground floor are three arches, mutually connected via a tie rod. The arches are filled with glass. To the right of the broad risalt a tower breaks through the roof. The tower is crowned with a Flemish helm roof and consists of three building storeys. The Flemish helm roof has a small roof dormer on all four cardinal directions. Below the roof on the two storeys below are two windows per building storey. At the boundary of the two building storeys a clock face is placed. On the building storey below is a cross window placed in the middle. The tower body then subsequently disappears into the roof after which the facade is continued on the attic storey with a large roof dormer which is flanked on both sides by a balustrade and a roof dormer with flat roof. On the storey below the overhanging balustrade a door is flanked by two windows with sash windows. Via the door a platform is reached which is placed on the roof of the ground floor. The facade of the ground floor is, in contrast to that of the storeys above, not recessed. On the ground floor is a large multi-pane window with three mullions. Next to this facade section a corner tower of four building storeys has been built, which is however considerably lower than the risalt to the left. The corner tower is built under a tent roof with small roof dormers. Directly below the gutter are two horizontal windows and on the storey below a window with cross mullion. On the ground floor is an arch with behind it a loggia. Against the northeast corner of the tower on the east a chimney is placed. The east side consists of three vertical facade sections, with a large central risalt. The tower on the east corner of the south side continues on the east facade and has a roof dormer on the attic storey and on the second storey two horizontal windows, one window on the first storey and one arch on the ground floor which provides access to the, already mentioned loggia. The central risalt consists of five building storeys and has at the top a cross window with shutters, on the second storey three cross windows with shutters and on the first storey four windows with sash windows. On the ground floor far to the left is a sash window which is flanked by a door with before it the continuous terrace from the south side. The terrace then breaks off making the basement visible, with two barred windows with central mullion. Above on the ground floor is a sash window with a natural stone horizontal central mullion. The third facade section, to the right of the central risalt, is designed as a corner tower which is placed under a tent roof and consists of four building storeys. The attic storey is left bare, on the first storey below is a sash window with shutter. On the ground floor is a window without shutters and at the basement are two barred windows.

The north side consists of six vertical facade sections. The first section to the left is the blank side wall of the central risalt of the east facade adorned with wall anchors. To the left of the blank wall the corner tower of the east side continues with a large roof dormer on the attic storey and on the first storey a window with shutters and on the ground floor below a cross window with shutters. To the left is the entrance bay. The entrance bay consists of a doorway with wooden panelled doors which are placed under a tympanum with half-columns on either side. Directly above the door section are four windows. Directly above this facade section the tower with Flemish helm is placed which on this side has six horizontally placed windows over three storeys. The tower body disappears into the lengthwise roof. The risalt consisting of five building storeys to the left of the entrance projects slightly forward from the facade. At the top the risalt is adorned with a hoist beam. Below is an opening window which is flanked by two smaller windows with a shutter. On the first storey a cross window with shutters is placed with to the right of it, on a diagonal line, three windows with sash windows with increasing size towards the right. On the ground floor to the left is a cross window with shutters. To the right of this are two paired windows which have shutters. At the basement are two barred windows with central mullion. The fifth, consisting of four building storeys, facade section is placed under a tent roof. The tent roof is broken through by a large oriel. On the first storey are two windows with central mullion and shutters. On the ground floor three windows with sash window are placed and at the basement three barred windows with central mullion with in front of the two rightmost a railing. The lower facade section adjacent has four building storeys and on the attic storey an unusual roof dormer which is an enlarged version of the small roof dormers. The first storey has one window with central mullion and shutters to the right of which are two windows with sash windows and shutters. On the ground floor on the left are three narrow sash windows, while to the right is a cross window with shutters. At the basement are four barred windows with a railing in front. The seventh, consisting of four building storeys, facade section is a narrow risalt which has a round window at the top and below it a combined window with shutters. On the storey are two windows. This facade section also has two paired windows on the ground floor. At the basement are three paired barred windows.

The west side consists of three vertical facade sections. The facade section on the north consists of three building storeys. On the attic storey are two small roof dormers. On the first storey to the left are two paired windows and to the right a window with shutters. On the ground floor are two windows with sash windows and a cross window, as well as four barred windows at the basement. In the central, slightly projecting, tower form of six building storeys are on the third storey two small windows. On the second storey are two windows with shutters and on the first storey and partially on the ground floor the same series of two windows. Furthermore on the ground floor itself is one more window and a door. The basement has two paired barred windows which are flanked on both sides by a smaller barred window. The risalt consisting of four building storeys has at the top a round window. Below is a cross window with shutters. On the first storey in the middle is a window with central mullion below which is a window with a segmental arch. On the ground floor two windows with sash windows are placed and at the basement are two barred windows. The wall surface of the southern facade section of the west side runs, due to the platform which is on the south side from ground floor level, some metres further.

The INTERIOR of the main building is, particularly with regard to the ground floor and staircase, still in the original state. On the ground floor are to be found, among others, a central hall, staircase and dining room in neo-Dutch Renaissance style, a room in neo-classical style à la Robert Adam, a salon in neo-Louis XV style, a salon in neo-Louis XIV style and a study in a contemporary decorative style (1900) à la Jacques van den Bosch.

Valuation

The main building with its associated interior is of general interest as a historically-functional main component of the Duin en Kruidberg estate complex; as an early 20th-century country house in neo-Dutch Renaissance style, a highlight from the oeuvre of the architects J.J., M.A. and J. van Nieukerken; owing to the well-preserved interior (ground floor) which as a total work of art was created by the architect and various artists; because of its striking location within the garden and park layout.
