Inleiding

Description
Introduction
ROSE GARDEN, presumably laid out at the beginning of the 20th century by landscape architects L.A. Springer and H. Copijn, as part of the country estate Nijenrode.
The country estate has its origins in a 13th century castle. Important expansions and restorations took place notably in the 17th century under Johan I Ortt, who also commissioned the design of a formal garden. From 1907 the country estate was owned by Amsterdam coffee merchant Michiel Onnes. He had the castle restored under the direction of architect E.G. Wentinck to a 17th century situation and added several outbuildings. The landscape architects L.A. Springer and H. Copijn were responsible for transforming the layout between 1912-1915 into a landscaped garden with a mixed character. At present Nijenrode University for Business Administration is located in the castle and with the purchase of land in the direction of the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal the territory of the country estate has been enlarged again.
Description
The rose garden lies to the north of the castle and is oriented north-south. It is a geometric, formally designed garden with lawns, gravel paths and rose beds. On the west, north and east sides the garden is bordered by tall yew hedges with dome-shaped recesses in which sculptures are placed. On the south side there are beeches. On the west side there is an elongated wooden pergola for climbing roses. On the east side stands an iron arbour. In the middle is a sunken section, accessed by four brick stairs with natural stone treads. Centrally situated is a metal arbour. On the lawns stand vases on plinths. On the north side there is a narrow path, enclosed with hedges, which ends in a steep brick staircase with natural stone treads and balustrade.
Valuation
The rose garden, which is presumably laid out at the beginning of the twentieth century by the landscape architects L.A. Springer and H. Copijn, is of general importance because of the landscape architectural value as a well-preserved example of a rose garden in formal style with associated built components such as arbours, stairs and garden ornaments; because of the art-historical value of the garden ornaments and sculptures; as well as because of the cultural-historical value as a reminder of the functional arrangement of the historical country estate; as well as because of the historical relationship with other component gardens located in the park such as the landscaped garden. The garden has ensemble value because of the spatial-functional relationship with the built objects and garden ornaments and sculptures located in the garden.
