Inleiding
De VOORBOUW VAN de SYNAGOGE, gelegen in de gesloten straatwand van de Hamstraat in Roermond, is gebouwd in 1897 naar ontwerp van architect Speetjens onder invloed van het Eclecticisme. De voorbouw bestaat uit een dubbele winkel met bovengelegen woningruimte, die momenteel niet wordt gebruikt.
Tussen de beide winkels loopt een gang naar de achtertuin, waar zich een kleine synagoge bevindt uit 1953 naar ontwerp van architect A. Oznowicz uit Amsterdam. Deze vervangt de oorspronkelijke synagoge, die tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog is verwoest. Tijdens de bouw is tegen de linkerzijde van de achtergevel tevens een bijgebouwtje geplaatst van een bouwlaag onder een plat dak.
Omschrijving
De VOORBOUW VAN DE SYNAGOGE heeft een L-vormige plattegrond en is gebouwd in drie bouwlagen onder een zadeldak met pannen. Het pand heeft een opstand van rode baksteen in kruisverband met gepleisterde speklagen. In de gevels bevinden zich rechthoekige houten dubbele kozijnen met bovenlicht.
De VOORGEVEL is symmetrisch van opbouw. In de eerste laag bevinden zich twee gespiegelde winkelpuien, die bestaan uit een venster met bovenlicht boven een gecementeerde plint en een deur met bovenlicht. De rechter winkelpui heeft geen bovenlicht.
Tussen deur en venster staat een gietijzeren kolom. Beide winkelpuien bevinden zich tussen gestucte rustica kolommen.
Centraal tussen de winkelpuien bevindt zich een originele dubbele houten deur met bovenlicht met gekleurd glas-in-lood in ruitmotief. De kolommen aan weerszijden van deze deur eindigen in consoles onder diamantkoppen en fries met bloktanden. In de tweede en derde laag bevinden zich twee keer twee vensters in een segmentboogvormige lijst met profielsteen, gepleisterd vulstuk onder strek met gestucte sluitsteen. Dorpels als cordonlijst. De bovenlichten van de rechter vensters hebben een bovenlicht met gedeeltelijk gekleurd glas-in-lood. Tussen de vensters van de tweede bouwlaag bevindt zich een groot natuursteen ornament met de tien geboden en tekst in het Hebreeuws. Kleine kolommen tussen vierkante basementen waarop zuilen van de composiete orde. Boven de zuilen een fries met fronton. Tussen de vensters in de derde laag een ronde lijst met davidster. De gevel wordt beëindigd door een stuclijst met geprofileerde consoles waartussen panelen onder bloktanden.
Centraal een ronde opening voor rozet. Dakoverstek met goot.
De ACHTERGEVEL van het pand heeft aan de linkerzijde een korte uitbouw van drie bouwlagen en rechts een kleine aanbouw van één bouwlaag onder een plat dak.
Tegen deze uitbouw staat het bijgebouwtje uit 1953. De achtergevel van de uitbouw van drie lagen is blind en gecementeerd. In de zijgevel van deze uitbouw bevindt zich per laag een venster. Rechts naast de aanbouw bevindt zich centraal in de eerste bouwlaag een dubbele houten deur met vensters met tweekleurig glas-in-lood in ruitmotief, eveneens in bovenlicht.
Rechts een tweedelig venster. Beide bevinden zich onder een golfplaten afdak, dat bevestigt is tussen beide uitbouwen. In de tweede en derde laag bevinden zich originele vensters, in de tweede met rolluiken.
De STRUCTUUR van het INTERIEUR is in hoge mate in tact.
WAARDEVOLLE INTERIEURONDERDELEN zijn ondermeer de plafondornamenten. De trappen naar de eerste verdieping ontbreken.
Tegen de tuinmuur bevindt zich een ingemetseld natuursteen ORNAMENT met daarop de tien geboden. Achter in de tuin bevindt zich de synagoge uit 1953.
Waardering
De cultuurhistorische waarden van de VOORBOUW van de SYNAGOGE worden bepaald door het bijzonder belang van het pand als bijzondere uitdrukking van de culturele en geestelijke ontwikkeling van het Joodse geloof in Roermond en Limburg en als kenmerkend voorbeeld van de typologische ontwikkeling van winkelpanden met bovenwoning. In the second and third storeys are two sets of two windows in a segmental arch-shaped panel with ashlar, plastered fill piece under brick course with stuccoed keystone. Sills as cord mouldings. The fanlights of the right windows have a fanlight with partly coloured leaded glass. Between the windows of the second storey is a large natural stone ornament with the Ten Commandments and text in Hebrew. Small columns between square plinths on which pillars of the Composite order.
