Inleiding

Evelein in 13 appartementen gewijzigd.

Introduction

TEA PAVILION, from 1896, in chalet style, as part of the originally 18th-century country estate 'Zwaanwijck' now converted into apartments. In 1894 the widow of Amsterdam money merchant M.N. de Pré decided to establish a new country estate with, in addition to a newly built main house, various outbuildings. In the nineteen-seventies the country estate with main building, gardener's cottage and coach house were converted into 13 apartments according to designs by architect M.P. Evelein. The garden was redesigned by amongst others Mien Ruys.

Description

The tea pavilion is situated in the south-east corner of the landscaped park by a broad dyke between the Klompweg and the park. The pavilion beneath a depressed tent roof has an octagonal ground plan, with an internal diameter of 2.67 metres, and a slightly lower rectangular extension on the north side. The extension has a flat roof with in the centre a narrower raised gabled roof with overhang. The pavilion roof, originally provided with slate roofing, is now covered with asphalt paper with a simple zinc finial as crowning. The narrow gabled roof likewise has asphalt paper roofing. The surrounding roof edge is provided with a sawn drip moulding.

The pavilion is constructed from a framework of profiled timber posts above a high plinth of cemented brickwork. Above the plinth rectangular panels are arranged all round up to window-sill height with fillings of cement, provided with imitation red-yellow tilework. Above this on five sides a sash window is placed, above which chevron arches are laid and fillings consisting of decorative fretwork and beadwork in herringbone motif. The walls of the rectangular extension are executed accordingly. Both side facades have a small octagonal window beneath a pediment-shaped canopy on cut corbels. The rear facade contains the entrance with the roof overhang as an awning, supported by richly cut corbels. A small stoep with two steps leads to the entrance.

On the inside the walls consist of vertical beadwork. The ceiling has beadwork in a star-shaped motif with an ornamented centre rosette. The beads are gilded as are parts of the rosette. On either side of the entrance in the rectangular extension there are a small kitchen and a toilet.

Valuation

The building is of general importance by reason of its cultural-historical and architectural value as an example of a late nineteenth-century timber tea pavilion richly decorated in chalet style, with an extension belonging to the original design in which a kitchen and toilet, and also by reason of the very well-preserved main form and detailing and material use. Furthermore by reason of the important ensemble value in spatial, functional and stylistic coherence with the other complex components. The tea pavilion is of importance as a particular expression of a habitation history connected with the settlement of the 19th-century elite at the Vecht.
