The register's description

Inleiding

Evelein in dertien appartementen gewijzigd.

Introduction

PARK in landscape style, as part of the originally eighteenth-century country estate 'Zwaanwijck'. In 1894 the widow of Amsterdam money-dealer M.N. de Pré decided to establish a new country estate with, alongside a newly built main house, various outbuildings. In the nineteen-seventies the country estate with main building, gardener's cottage and coach house was converted into thirteen apartments to a design by architect M.P. Evelein. The garden was redesigned by, among others, Mien Ruys.

Description

The park north of the Klompweg occupies a virtually rectangular site mostly surrounded by ditches and is accessed via a gate on a brick dam. The park is characterised by a landscape-designed park woodland with a winding path system and ponds, namely a large serpentine pond and a hat-shaped pond. Small islands planted with bosage lie in the ponds. Around the serpentine pond the terrain is uneven. Behind the gardener's cottage a nineteenth-century small bridge crosses the serpentine pond in a north-south direction. Furthermore there are tree groups, mainly maple, poplar and chestnut, and individual trees such as oak, beech, plane or chestnut. Along the so-called sheep meadow in the southern part of the park stand pollard willows. On the south side and part of the west side, parallel to the surrounding ditch, runs a lane with oaks on either side. Finally there is a recently restored standard-form orchard in the northern part of the park.

From the site and from the main building there is a north-easterly view of the former fort situated in the Vecht, and in a north-westerly direction to the Aetsveldsepolder. From the tea pavilion there is a view of the Horn and Kwijerpolder and the Reevaart and two church towers of Nederhorst den Berg. The terrace on the south side of the main building affords a view of the tea pavilion. On the south-east side of the park between the Klompweg and the Vecht lies a narrow outer garden with a modern landing stage.

Valuation

The park is of general importance because of its garden-historical value as an example of a nineteenth-century landscape-designed park with as a defining element a large serpentine pond and various sight lines. Furthermore because of its landscape value as a striking green element in the open landscape along the north side of the Vecht.
