Omschrijving complexonderdeel 5

De ZIEKENBARAK, gebouw I, is in 1880 gebouwd in sobere neorenaissance stijl naar ontwerp van Eerst Aaanwezend Ingenieur der Genie W.K.T. Egter.

Description complex component 5

The SICK BARRACK, building I, was built in 1880 in sober neorenaissanceStyle after a design by Chief Engineer of Engineers W.K.T. Egter. The building is somewhat isolated in relation to the other historic complex components because of its function as a sick barrack, close to the former outer ditch of the old fort. The building on an almost L-shaped ground plan consists of one storey under a gabled roof with a steep gable, covered with burnt tuiles du Nord. The roof ridges are closed off by a round ridge tile. The facades above a plastered plinth are constructed in grey brick in stretcher bond provided with horizontal bands in yellow brick. The gable tops on the north and west sides have a stepped frieze. Above the window and door openings, stretchers with natural stone setting and closing stones have been applied.

The front facade (north side) has on the right a symmetrically arranged, projecting gable part with a panel door with cast-iron door grille under a three-pane fanlight in the middle, flanked by a window with two narrow coupled sash windows. Above the entrance two ventilation grilles are provided. To the left of the projection are two six-pane sash windows. The right side facade contains two twelve-pane sash windows and two ventilation grilles in the gable top. The left side facade is blind. The rear facade contains three (originally sash) windows with fanlight and a door. Far left is a small extension (privy) under a catslide roof with small window and a door in the side facade. The original layout with a large (sick) ward and a number of small adjoining rooms, among others previously used as an apothecary and sick orderly's quarters, has been retained. The former sick ward is provided with a lightly arched stuccoed ceiling.

Valuation complex component 5

The building is of general importance on account of its military culture and architectural-historical value as an example of a reasonably well-preserved sick barrack in terms of main form and facade layout built in 1880 in sober neorenaissanceStyle as part of the barracks complex. Furthermore, of ensemble value on account of the spatial, functional and stylistic coherence with the other complex components.
