Inleiding

Introduction

The DAM LOCK was built in 1871 by the Corps of Engineers as part of the New Dutch Water Line, in conjunction with the fort of Nieuwersluis. The lock is located in the Vecht slightly north of the bridge over the river in the centre of Nieuwersluis. The Vecht fulfilled an important function in the supply of inundation water from the then Zuiderzee and the Lek. The dam lock was built to prevent a confluence of the low water level from the Zuiderzee and the much higher water level in the Lek. The damming was carried out by placing a double row of sluice gates in the three navigation openings. The space between the sluice gates received a sand and clay filling for a tight closure. For the storage of the sluice gates there was formerly a sluice gate shed right along the Rijksstraatweg. The dam lock no longer serves any function.

Description

The dam lock with three navigation openings consists of a masonry abutment on both river banks with between them two elliptical masonry centre piers. In the masonry of the abutments and centre piers are recesses for the sluice gates. The ends of the centre piers are reinforced with natural stone blocks. The coping plates of the abutments and centre piers are of concrete. From each abutment is a simple catwalk to a centre pier. Between the two centre piers there is no connection.

Valuation

The lock is of general importance because of its cultural and architectural-historical value as an intact example of a dam lock built in 1871 as part of the New Dutch Water Line in general and the fort of Nieuwersluis in particular.
