The register's description

HISTORICAL GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the country estate Vredenhoef. The small-scale historical park layout in early landscape style is presumed to have been created in its present form around 1800. Entirely enclosed by watercourses the park lies on the western bank of the Vecht in the midst of arable land and meadows. In its small scale the landscape park is characteristic of the early landscape style in the Netherlands. Central to the layout are the main building and coachhouse at a forecourt covered with gravel. The forecourt is separated from the road by a narrow ditch, which is bridged on the axis of the house by a brick bridge with brick-built flower boxes from the 1930s. In the southern corner of the triangular plot lies the coachhouse, separated from the forecourt by a high hedge and with its own walled garden to the rear, which is currently (2001) used amongst other things for holding sculpture exhibitions. To the north of this is the main building with the landscape park layout surrounding it. This is characterized by undulating lawns with some tree groups and individual specimens from the time of the layout, two fine pond areas and an orchard. The timber stand is varied, with some monumental trees including oak, red beech, chestnut and maple. A ditch planted with maples and oaks marks in the west the transition to the meadow area beyond. The trees and tree groups originally planted here in a pseudo-natural manner, which is characteristic of the early landscape style, serve as coulisses framing picturesque views onto the open meadows and arable land beyond. According to two R.A.F. aerial photographs from the early 1940s the park was planted more densely with timber stands than nowadays; at that time the relatively dense vegetation on the NW side of the park offered two views onto these meadows and arable land. At the front of the park there is a view of the monumental country estate Vechtoever. In the rear of the garden lie the foundations of a many-sided small building, probably a garden house or tea pavilion. There was also a many-sided tea pavilion on the perched location on the Vecht, which was demolished in 1856. The perched location itself had to give way to the widening of the Straatweg and has since been absorbed into the verge of this road.

Valuation The HISTORICAL GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the country estate Vredenhoef is of general importance: - On account of the well-preserved forecourt with entrance bridge on the axis of the house; - As a well-preserved example of a small-scale layout in early landscape style with a timber stand partly dating from the time of the layout, well-preserved landscape ponds, an orchard and picturesque views onto the meadow area beyond; - On account of the characteristic perspective effect in the park section on the west side, which has been created by the contrast between the relatively enclosed park section on this side and the openness of the land beyond, and which is characteristic of parks in 19th-century landscape style in the Netherlands; - On account of the functional-spatial coherence with the other components of the country estate.
