Omschrijving onderdeel 2:

HISTORISCHE PARKAANLEG.

Description of component 2:

HISTORICAL PARK LAYOUT.

Around the house lies an early 19th-century landscape design based on a simple earlier geometric layout, of which only the drive and the sight line through the house (albeit in modified form) remain; from the Lageweg a long straight asphalted drive with double rows of beech in triangular spacing runs northwards towards the round forecourt of the house; halfway along its length the drive has a bend; at that point a formerly used north-south running lane section continues as a broad sandy path straight ahead. Until the nineteen sixties the lane ran straight ahead and via a right angle towards the west perpendicular to the centre of the house; the still existing part is also planted with beech; in the fork of the two lanes a woodland pond. The forecourt lies directly in front of the house and is connected to the drive by a short path, enclosed between shrub groups, in which some old oaks; the forecourt consists of a circular grass plot surrounded by a broad asphalt path with in the centre a sandstone base surrounded by shrubs (see below under 9); the forecourt is bounded on the south side by the coach house (see below under 3), on the north side it opens out into the so-called Polhof. The forecourt and the Polhof formed an enclosed space, which was visually separated from the park behind the house by a large solitary oak (felled in the nineteen sixties). A similar visual separation by a red beech existed until 1964 between the house and the coach house. The actual landscape park is modest in size and extends particularly to the west and north of the house. The layout consists of a park meadow, in which two elongated ponds (the Huisvijver and the Spiegel or Achtervijver) and solitaries. One pond, the Huisvijver, lies directly to the north of the house; the other, the Spiegel or Achtervijver, lies to the west of the house at the end of the layout; this pond connects to an old Berkelarm. From the house various vistas and walks extend over and through the landscape onto the farms. One vista runs over the park meadow and the Spiegel or Achtervijver into the open landscape in the direction of Berkel. The view is accompanied on the north side by a ditch planted with copses and trees, which runs westwards from the house pond towards the Berkelarm. A second vista is from the house in an easterly direction, the former right-angled access drive. In addition there is a view towards the northeast over the Polhof towards an oval park meadow with round bowl and solitaries, surrounded by a tree belt. To the south of the aforementioned layout lies a plot of old deciduous woodland intersected by several straight paths. In the most westerly section stands an 18th-century pavilion; in the Boombosch with mainly oak and beech an undergrowth of rhododendrons. To the east of this woodland plot and to the south of the house lies the relatively large vegetable garden divided into sections with orchard, for the most part surrounded by hawthorn and beech hedges. In 1817 the existing utility garden was altered: a grape house coming from de Cloese was placed, a garden wall was built. In 1913 part of the horse stable was converted into an orangery. The vegetable garden and orchard are separated from each other by a fence. There are still two remains of greenhouses and three cold frames. To the south of the vegetable garden, along the drive, lies the Nieboer farm complex, at the end of the drive on the north side the Scholten farm complex. Parallel to and east of the north-south running lane runs an old sheep drift, which is named 'Allée' on the cadastral map of 1825. At the end of the sheep drift lies the farm complex 'Aytink'.

Valuation

HISTORICAL GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT, belonging to the historic country estate de Velhorst, of general cultural-historical and garden-historical significance:

- on account of its age

- on account of the well-preserved 19th-century landscape park over an older geometric system

- on account of the walks from and around the house with various vistas

- on account of the landscape-visual qualities, particularly as seen from the Berkeldal
