Omschrijving

- vanwege de ouderdom;

- vanwege de bij de buitenplaats behorende gaaf bewaarde historische tuin- en parkaanleg in (Engelse) landschapsstijl;

- vanwege de 19de-eeuwse rondwandeling met bijbehorende aankleding;

Description

HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the country estate Mattemburgh. A well-preserved layout in landscape style which was begun in 1846, designed by C. van Cuyk, until c.1863. Since then the layout has undergone no notable changes, only the construction of the Antwerpsestraatweg in 1969-1970 disrupted the unity of the estate. The historic garden and park layout is situated within the Beukendreef (south) and the Dubbele Dreef (north), both indicated on the topographical map of c.1850. A design drawing from 1846 shows the immediate surroundings of the house with the serpentine pond and the lobe-shaped path pattern, as is still largely present. In a subsequent phase from 1850, the hill was laid out on the north side as a viewpoint; presumably the valley of the stream the Blaffert was also incorporated at that time. Linden avenues form an important element in the layout, as does the decoration with a few picturesque elements such as the 'rock bridge' and the garden pavilion. Around the house a lawn with on the front (street) side a raised round (or star-shaped) mosaic bed, so-called 'pudding' or Pückler Muskau bed (named after this element introduced at Muskau - Germany); the colour of the foliage of annuals gives the pattern; around the bed iron arches forming a characteristic edging. The flower bed is a typical phenomenon from the late 19th century. The park behind the house consists of an accidented lawn intersected by the winding water feature and a path pattern running in broad curves. The layout is furnished with bosques (rhododendrons and shrubs), solitary trees and tree groups against the background of a green backdrop of the woodland behind with fine trees along the edge for closure. Due to the openness of the layout there are changing perspectives over the broad lawn and the serpentine pond. From the house runs a diagonal sight line in a south-westerly direction into the woods where it is terminated by a small hill. The pavilion on the hill forms a prominent point; from the approximately 11-metre-high hill various lanes (patte d'oie) run into the woods, and there are vistas over the valley and towards the Oosterschelde. The middle lane of the goose foot is laid out as a broad sight line. This lane is intersected by a cross lane (north-south), which ends on the south side at a small hill. The stream De Blaffert flows along the south edge of the layout, along the woods and through the meadow (valley). The transition from the park woods to the meadows consists of a fine protruding woodland edge with accents of copper beeches. The valley, which widens in a westerly direction, is incorporated in the round walk and forms, through its depth effect and various vistas, an important element in the layout. In 1959, behind the orangery a neoformale garden was laid out with grass strips and beech hedges; due to its short age (younger than 50 years), this layout is still of subsidiary significance for the protection.

Assessment

HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the country estate Mattemburgh is of general importance:

- because of its age;

- because of the well-preserved historic garden and park layout in (English) landscape style belonging to the country estate;

- because of the 19th-century round walk with associated decoration;

- because of the functional-spatial coherence with the other components of the country estate.
