Omschrijving

HOOFDGEBOUW (Mattembrugh).

Description

MAIN BUILDING (Mattembrugh). A country house built in neoclassicist style, the core of which dates from 1846-1848 (oval room flanked by a room) and the extension to the current block-shaped building from 1852-1854; construction and extension by architect J. Franssen from Antwerp. The elongated whitewashed building is one aisle deep and constructed from a basement and two storeys beneath a gently sloping hipped roof covered with slate with two chimneys and small roof dormers terminated by triangular pediments. The conservatory against the south facade dates from 1878. The symmetrically arranged facades have window bays consisting of a barred basement window (two-light) and two Empire windows positioned one above the other with rounded corners and an iron glazing bar division. The representative facade is situated on the street side, while the main entrance is located on the rear side (garden side). The front facade is articulated vertically by pilasters and corner strips, which are executed in ashlar at the level of the basement and principal floor, and horizontally by drip moulding and string courses. The facade is seven window bays wide with a central risalit of three window bays, the centre of which is marked by a single-storey dome-shaped oriel with three eight-pane windows. The flat roof of the extension has a balcony with a natural stone balustrade and vases; on the storey above a three-part window (centre double balcony doors) set in a frame crowned by a pediment. The facade on the garden side, where the main entrance is located, is executed much flatter with only horizontal articulation of string course and cornice. In the slightly projecting centre axis is the double access door with a semicircular fanlight furnished with radial bars, set in a round-arched frame; the door is flanked by a lantern and a framed standing four-pane window above which is a round framed niche. The storey window is executed in Serliana motif. Against the south side facade stands the single-storey conservatory with a flight of steps. The north side facade is executed blind.

In the INTERIOR, noteworthy among other things is the well-preserved spatial arrangement with central hall and transverse passage to which the rooms are situated with the dome room on the axis of the house; the square hall has a marble floor and white-marbled walls, the doors are set in pilaster arrangements which are also marbled in a contrasting colour (brown), flight of steps; dome room likewise with doors set in marbled pilaster arrangements, family portraits; the dome room is flanked by a small room an antechamber (north) with marble fireplace and a pantry (south) with marble fireplace, cupboards and tiled linen against the walls; adjoining a baroque room (north) with white marble fireplace, wainscoting and a richly decorated, stuccoed ceiling with coffers and to the south a large room with marble fireplace; the conservatory with hot water installation (hardstone tank, two taps and a heating section); basement storey with natural stone floor, kitchen with hardstone water tank and copper taps, heating section with cast-iron stove.

Assessment MAIN BUILDING (Mattemburgh)

Of general importance:

- because of its age;

- because of its architectural design in neoclassicist style from the mid-19th century;

- because of the well-preserved spatial arrangement and interior components from the construction period;

- because of its prominent location within the park layout and on the Antwerpsestraatweg;

- because of the functional-spatial relationship with the other components of the country estate.
