Omschrijving
Omschrijving

Description
Description
On the north side of Boskoop opposite the station and adjoining the built-up area stands an EXHIBITION BUILDING, called Flora, built around 1932 in functionalist style (New Objectivity) after a design by municipal architect D.L. Landman. The building, constructed in yellow brick in English bond, consists of differently shaped building masses with straight and semi-rounded forms, horizontal and vertical lines. The rectangular central section with its front facing Parkweg has two storeys with a plinth of travertine stone and beneath a flat roof. Around this central section the transition to the outdoor space is playfully designed with rounded forms, different roof shapes and facade terminations, smaller and larger vertical elements (chimney tower, square tower, flagpoles). To the left is a semi-circular built-out corner section with against the side facade a single-storey semi-circular extension and to the right a tall tower crowned by a lantern/light mast and adjoining against the side facade originally one-and-a-half-storey extensions. Adjoining a lengthy rear section that is rounded off on the east side. In the front section was located the reception area and a café-restaurant, while the rear section served as an exhibition and banquet hall; there was also a stage and a bowling alley. Due to changing use the front facade has been modified, the steel windows have been partially replaced by plastic and some extensions have been raised by one storey. The front facade originally had on the ground floor five double semi-circular doors of iron (or steel) with glass above a further blind facade with only in the middle five narrow light strips with a continuous concrete sill. The vertical line of the light strips is continued in the four flagpoles that are positioned between them. To the left, against the semi-circular built-out corner that extends to the eaves line of the front facade, is a fifth flagpole. The corner is covered by a surrounding gabled roof (roof covering of roof felt) with overhang, beneath it three recessed two-pane windows are installed with a continuous concrete sill. In the north facade there are directly beneath the overhang a row of (8) steel six-pane windows with a continuous concrete sill. This side facade is terminated on the east side by a semi-circular built-up chimney. Against the side facade (north) stands a transverse wing on a rectangular ground plan with semi-circular termination on the north side of one-and-a-half storeys beneath a gabled roof with overhang. Directly below the roof edge a row of two-pane windows with a continuous concrete sill. To the left of the extension a six-pane window and an entrance door. The front facade has to the right a tower raised on a square ground plan beneath a small gabled roof with overhang and originally crowned by a light mast. Directly below the roof edge is situated in the facade surfaces a nine-pane window with concrete sill, further the facade surfaces are provided with a central narrow light strip that is slightly recessed. Against the side facade (south) an extension originally of one-and-a-half storeys (now raised) beneath a gabled roof with overhang and with directly beneath it a row of two-pane windows with a continuous concrete sill; in the semi-circular built-out section large nine-pane windows and on the gable end double terrace doors (view over the rosarium). The rear section is covered by a gabled roof with a raised glazed ridge. Directly below the overhang a row of four-pane windows with a continuous concrete sill; originally in the south facade some double semi-circular doors. In the INTERIOR is of importance among others the stairwell, the hall with semi-circular stage provided with stage and a rear wall with doors to dressing rooms, the bowling alley.
Valuation
The exhibition building Flora is of general importance - because of the architectural design from around 1932 in functionalist style (New Objectivity) after a design by municipal architect D.L. Landman; - as an example from the oeuvre of architect D.L. Landman; - because of its typological value (rare object); - because of its cultural-historical value for Boskoop as a national horticultural centre; - because of its multi-functional use as an exhibition space both inside and outside (rosarium) in combination with a café-restaurant and banquet hall; - because of its location in relation to the nearby station and storage shed; - because of the functional-spatial value in relation to the rosarium.
