Inleiding
De R.K. BASISSCHOOL voor jongens is gesitueerd aan de westelijke zijde van het kerkplein, in het centrum van Raamsdonk. De "Sint Leoschool" werd gebouwd in 1926, in een regionale variant van de Amsterdamse School. Sinds de jaren '70 fungeert de school als verenigingsgebouw. In 1998 werd tegen de westgevel van de school een appartementencomplex gebouwd.
Omschrijving
Het schoolgebouw heeft een globaal L-vormige plattegrond. Aan de westzijde is een modern tweelaags appartementencomplex tegen de school aangebouwd. Eén bouwlaag onder een samengesteld, overstekend schilddak, gedekt met verbeterde Hollandse pannen. Geprofileerde bakgoot. In het zuidelijke, westelijke en oostelijke dakschild van de westvleugel brede dakvensters. De gevels zijn opgetrokken in baksteen, met decoratief metselwerk in de plint.
De asymmetrische voorgevel (westgevel) van de westelijke vleugel is ter plaatse van de twee tegen de voorgevel gesitueerde klaslokalen voorzien van grote rechtgesloten drielichtsvensters, met ladderroeden in de bovenlichten. De ingangspartij wordt gemarkeerd door een torenachtige opbouw met afgeschuinde hoeken, waarboven een torenhelm. Hierin een portaal met afgeronde hoeken. Hierin een moderne vleugeldeur. Boven het portaal een breed vierruits venster en een beeldnis met beeld, voorstellende de heilige Leo. Aan weerszijden hiervan smalle drieruits vensters.
De kopse (noordelijke) gevel van de westvleugel heeft in het midden een uitbouw onder lager schilddak, met aan weerszijden hiervan lage uitbouwen onder plat. Het middendeel wordt op de hoeken gemarkeerd door pilasters. Rechtgesloten vensters met tweeruits ramen. In de oostelijke uitbouw een portaal met betonnen luifel, waarin de achteringang.
De achtergevel (oostgevel) gaat gedeeltelijk schuil achter een éénlaags aanbouw, die de school met het appartementengebouw verbindt. De gevel toont een geleding door middel van pilasters.
De zuidgevel van de zuidelijke vleugel wordt geleed door pilasters. Hiertussen kruisvensters met kleine roedenverdeling (ladderroeden in de bovenlichten), geheel links twee tweeruits vensters met ladderroeden. Geheel rechts gaat de gevel schuil achter een vensterloze aanbouw onder plat.
De oostgevel van de zuidvleugel toont eveneens een pilastergeleding. Links twee tweeruits ramen, gedeeltelijk dichtgezet. Rechts twee grote drielichtsvensters met bovenlichten. In de noordgevel van de zuidvleugel twee drielichtsvensters met bovenlichten.
Inwendig toont het gebouw in hoofdlijnen nog de oorspronkelijke indeling. Aansluitend op de vestibule een L-vormige gang. Hieraan liggen in de westelijke vleugel tegen de voorgevel twee grote lokalen. Ten zuiden van de vestibule/gang in de zuidvleugel een gymnastieklokaal en kleedruimte. Op de zuidoostelijke hoek van de zuidvleugel een derde lokaal. In de gangen nog (delen van) de oorspronkelijke tegellambrisering.
Waardering
Het schoolgebouw van de R.K. Basisschool "St. Leo" is van algemeen belang. Het object bezit cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociaal-economische en geestelijke ontwikkeling: het illustreert de ontwikkeling van het katholieke basisonderwijs in kleinere dorpen in het interbellum. Voorts is het object van belang als illustratie van de typologische ontwikkeling van het schoolgebouw. Het object heeft architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege de toegepaste stijl, een regionale variant van de Amsterdamse School.
