Inleiding.
GRAFKRUIS aan de zuidzijde van de aan de Sint Markoenstraat gelegen begraafplaats. Het uit 1884 daterende grafkruis van J.J. Mol, voormalig pastoor te Dorst, is uitgevoerd in Neo-Gotische stijl.
Omschrijving.
Het object bestaat uit een gietijzeren Latijns kruis op een gefrijnde hardstenen sokkel. De kruisarmen zijn ingevuld en bezet met stijlelementen die geheel aan de Gotiek zijn ontleend. Het maaswerk bestaat uit een aaneenschakeling van cirkels en ezelsrugbogen, veelvuldig gelardeerd met toten, hogels en afgeplatte kruisbloemen. Op het snijpunt van de kruisarmen is een plaquette opgeschroefd met aan de voorzijde de tekst 'D.O.M. / RUSTPLAATS / VAN DEN Z.E.W. / HEER J.J. MOL PASTOOR IN / DORST OVERL. DEN 10 OCT. / 1884 / R.I.P.'. Aan weerszijden van de plaquette kleine pinakels met schacht, spits en kruisbloem. Breed aangezette, maar zich verjongende voet waarin onder andere twee vierpassen, een driepasboog, pinakelachtige elementen met tootbogen, hogels en een afgeplatte kruisbloem. In het boogveld van de centrale ezelsrugboog een zowel van voren als van achteren te aanschouwen voorstelling van de Kruisafname.
Waardering.
Het grafkruis van J.J. Mol is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarden als bijzondere uitdrukking van de ontwikkeling van de rooms-katholieke grafcultuur aan het einde van de negentiende eeuw. Het feit dat het hier gaat om de persoon van J.J. Mol, voormalig pastoor van Dorst, maakt het object waardevol voor de geschiedenis van het katholicisme en het bisdom. Verder vanwege het belang voor de typologische ontwikkeling van gietijzeren grafkruisen. Het object bezit kunsthistorische waarden wegens de esthetische kwaliteit van het ontwerp, de ornamenten en de verfijnde detaillering in met name de afbeeldingen. FUNERARY CROSS on the south side of the cemetery situated at Sint Markoenstraat. The funerary cross dating from 1884 of J.J. Mol, former pastor in Dorst, is executed in Neo-Gothic style.
Description.
The object consists of a cast iron Latin cross on a chiselled hard stone plinth. The cross arms are filled in and decorated with stylistic elements entirely borrowed from Gothic. The tracery consists of a chain of circles and pointed arches, frequently interspersed with crockets, projecting stones and flattened cross flowers. At the intersection of the cross arms a plaque is bolted with on the front the text 'D.O.M. / RESTING PLACE / OF THE DECEASED REV. / MR J.J. MOL PASTOR IN / DORST DIED ON 10 OCT. / 1884 / R.I.P.'. On either side of the plaque small pinnacles with shaft, spire and cross flower. Broadly set, but tapering foot in which among others two quatrefoils, a trefoil arch, pinnacle-like elements with hogsback arches, projecting stones and a flattened cross flower. In the arch field of the central hogsback arch a representation of the Descent from the Cross which can be viewed both from the front and from the back.

The funerary cross of J.J. Mol is of general importance. It has cultural-historical values as a particular expression of the development of Roman Catholic burial culture at the end of the nineteenth century. The fact that this concerns the person of J.J. Mol, former pastor of Dorst, makes the object valuable for the history of Catholicism and the diocese. Furthermore because of its importance for the typological development of cast iron funerary crosses.
