Inleiding.
Aan het einde van het middenpad bevindt zich het GRAFMONUMENT van Martinus Wijnaendts van Stein, ontworpen in 1875 in Neo-Renaissance stijl.
Martinus Wijnaendts werd in 1786 in Breda gedoopt als onwettige zoon van een luitenant der cavalerie. Aanvankelijk bracht hij het niet verder dan tuinmansleerling, maar nadat hij lezen en schrijven had geleerd ging hij regelmatig bij de dames Falaiseau, ongehuwde dochters van de overleden generaal der cavalerie Joseph Falaiseau, de krant voorlezen. Deze schatrijke dames maakten Martinus tot hun enige erfgenaam. Na hun dood trouwde Martinus Wijnaendts in 1825 met Jacoba Anna Margaretha van Gils uit Oosterhout. Het recht om de naam 'Heer Wijnaendts van Stein' te voeren ontleende hij aan de aankoop van de ambachtsheerlijkheid Stein en Willens. Na zijn overlijden in 1873 liet hij zijn gehele vermogen na aan protestantse filantropische instellingen, ondermeer zijn eigen 'Heer Wijnaendts van Stein's Fundatie', het oudste bejaardenhuis in Breda. Aan de hervormde gemeente te Oosterhout schonk hij het vruchtgebruik van een stuk grond in Dongen. Daaraan was wel de voorwaarde verbonden dat de hervormde gemeente zou zorgen voor het onderhoud van zijn grafmonument.
Omschrijving.
Bakstenen grafmonument in halfsteens metselwerk, omgeven door een smeedijzeren puntspijlenhek met tweevleugelig poortje. Het beslaat een rechthoekige plattegrond en heeft een met hardstenen platen afgedekt zadeldak met licht overstek. Omlopende plint. Overhoekse pijlers met dekplaten evenals de einden van de opstaande geprofileerde noklijn bekroond met bollen. In de dekplaten familiewapens met inscripties: 'RUSTPLAATS VAN DEN WEL EDELEN HEER / M. WIJNAENDTS / AMBACHTS HEER VAN DEN LANDE VAN STEIN WILLENS / VRIJHOEF EN KALVERENBROEK / GEBOREN TE BREDA DEN 25 SEPTEMBER 1786 / OVERLEDEN TE MAARSEVEEN 25 JULI 1875' en 'EN ZIJNE ECHTGENOOT VROUWE J.A.M. WIJNAENDTS GEBOREN / VAN GILS / GEBOREN TE OOSTERHOUT 9 JULI 1785 / OVERLEDEN TE MAARSEVEEN 6 MEI 1870'. Noordelijke kopgevel met hardstenen plaat onder een rondbogige rollaag met hardstenen aanzet- en vormstukken. In de plaat een kruis met ingebeitelde, oorspronkelijk vergulde tekst 'EINDE VAN ALLES'. Zuidelijke kopgevel met een kleine vierkante betraliede opening, zijgevels met smeedijzeren sierankers en ingebed siertraliewerk.
Waardering.
Het grafmonument van Martinus Wijnaendts is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarden als bijzondere uitdrukking van de ontwikkeling in de grafcultuur van de Nederlands Hervormde Kerk in de tweede helft van de negentiende eeuw. Daarnaast als uitdrukking van een sociale ontwikkeling in relatie tot de regionaal bekende persoon Wijnaendts. Verder vanwege het belang voor de typologische ontwikkeling van grafmonumenten van de sociale bovenklasse. Het object bezit architectuur- en kunsthistorische waarde wegens het ambachtelijk vaardige metselwerk, de detaillering en de verzorgde ornamentiek. Het object heeft tesamen met de ommuring met toegangshek ensemblewaarde als onderdeel van een klein, historisch gegroeid religieus ensemble aan de Nieuwe Bouwlingstraat. Het object is van belang wegens de gaafheid.

At the end of the centre aisle is located the GRAVE MONUMENT of Martinus Wijnaendts van Stein, designed in 1875 in Neo-Renaissance style.
Martinus Wijnaendts was baptised in Breda in 1786 as the illegitimate son of a cavalry lieutenant. Initially he rose no further than garden boy apprentice, but after he had learned to read and write he regularly read the newspaper to the unmarried daughters of the late cavalry general Joseph Falaiseau, the Misses Falaiseau. These extremely wealthy ladies made Martinus their sole heir. After their death Martinus Wijnaendts married Jacoba Anna Margaretha van Gils from Oosterhout in 1825. The right to bear the name 'Lord Wijnaendts van Stein' he derived from the purchase of the manorial lordship Stein and Willens. After his death in 1873 he bequeathed his entire fortune to Protestant philanthropic institutions, among them his own 'Lord Wijnaendts van Stein's Foundation', the oldest care home for the elderly in Breda. Brick grave monument in half-brick masonry, surrounded by wrought iron pointed-arch railing with double-leafed gate. It covers a rectangular plan and has a gabled roof covered with hardstone slabs with slight overhang. Continuous plinth. Corner piers with cover plates as well as the ends of the raised profiled ridge line crowned with spheres. In the cover plates family coats of arms with inscriptions: 'RESTING PLACE OF THE WELL-BORN LORD / M. WIJNAENDTS / MANORIAL LORD OF THE LAND OF STEIN WILLENS / FREEHOLD AND CALVERENBROEK / BORN IN BREDA 25 SEPTEMBER 1786 / DIED IN MAARSEVEEN 25 JULY 1875' and 'AND HIS WIFE LADY J.A.M. WIJNAENDTS BORN / VAN GILS / BORN IN OOSTERHOUT 9 JULY 1785 / DIED IN MAARSEVEEN 6 MAY 1870'. Northern end gable with hardstone slab beneath a round-arched roll course with hardstone setting and moulding pieces. In the slab a cross with chiselled, originally gilded text 'END OF ALL THINGS'. Southern end gable with a small square barred opening, end walls with wrought iron ornamental anchors and embedded decorative ironwork.
