Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Situated on the eastern side of Nieuwstraat, the Roman Catholic church of Sint-Michaël; erected in 1929-1931 to the design of architect H.W. Valk in a mixture of expressionistic, craft-traditional and gothic-inspired forms. The contractor was J. Gerats from Blerick. On 20 April 1931 the church was consecrated by Mgr. A.F. Diepen, the bishop of 's-Hertogenbosch. In 1934 part of the tower vault collapsed; this was restored in the following years. The church was built to replace the old, dating from 1839 and demolished in 1932, Waterstaatskerk on the Petrus-Dondersplein.
Description
Three-aisled transeptless church with tower and lantern tower above the crossing, with slate-covered saddle, lean-to and pyramidal roofs. The church is constructed entirely in brick and has a striking tower with a square spire at the angle between stepped gables flanked by round chapels with conical roofs. The nave has seven bays and has built-out confessionals in the side aisles. Further there is a choir bay with a substantial lantern tower and a low semicircular apse. On the north side, on a rectangular plan, is the former sacristy. The entire building, despite its unconventional layout, has fairly traditional gothicizing details in tower niches and the light windows of the nave, which are two-part in the side aisles and four-part in the choir bay.
Interior the three-aisled arrangement of side aisles and high clerestory proves to be surprisingly adapted to the striving to achieve the best possible view of the altar beneath the lantern tower. The nave has very lofty sharp parabolic arches with protruding fine masonry, which rest on small columns placed far back in the side aisles - which function as aisles and are roofed with groin vaults - in groups of one and two clay pipes coupled together. The nave has melon vaults upon which the clerestory windows with relieving arches abut. Below the windows are painted tableaus with biblical and general Christian symbols. These tableaus were restored in 1991 by Th. den Otter.
Through the cooperation of the side aisles and column aisles a fine spatial effect is created. The choir bay has side altars on either side of the triumphal arch with an image and a tabernacle in open niches, the choir aisle has an upper gallery adjoining the parabolic half-dome of the apse. From the sides and from above light falls on the altar placed before the somewhat dark apse; typical of the christocentric ideas in church building. Church furnishings have been altered since 1934. Two-manual organ made by Fr.B. Loret in 1876, of which the slides and the original pipes, as well as the organ case are of value from the perspective of monument conservation. Due to the placement of the organ it was necessary to place the high altar somewhat further forward. Furthermore in 1998 the loose church chairs were replaced by church benches from the Theresiakerk in Tilburg. The floor laid with yellow, white and black tiles had to be adapted somewhat as a result. The sacristy, which is located on the left side of the choir, has served as a chapel since 1981.
On the tower spire in 1992, to replace the weathercock blown away in a storm, a weathercock made by the 's-Hertogenbosch coppersmith guild was placed. The church inventory further includes among others a font from circa 1800 with wrought-iron base from the sixteenth century, a crucifix group from 1839, a station of the cross by W. Geraedts (1927), 7 statues from circa 1870, statues of among others Antonius, Barbara, Franciscus and Vincentius and two statues made around 1880 by Hendrik van der Geld. In the tower there is a statue of Cecilia dating from the second half of the nineteenth century.
Valuation
The Michaël church is of general importance. The church has cultural-historical value as a special expression of the development of Catholicism in the interwar period and the typological development of the christocentric parish church. The church has architectural-historical values on account of the place it occupies in the oeuvre of the 's-Hertogenbosch architect Hendrik Willem Valk and thus forms a transitional work between an expressionistic and a more traditional design. Furthermore the church displays an unusually high level of vault construction in brick and masonry ornamentation. The church has been preserved in excellent condition.
