Inleiding

80,7 cm; is buiten gebruik gesteld.

Waardering

Introduction

Roman-Catholic CHURCH of Sint Lambertus, built in 1923 and 1924 to the design of architect Wolter te Riele in neogothic forms. Te Riele had already built the nearby rectory on the Sint-Lambertusweg in 1913. The first drawings for the church date from the period 1912-1914. It is not entirely clear why the construction of the church was ultimately delayed by 10 years, but it is likely that the uncertain political and financial situation following the outbreak of the First World War played a role in this. Execution began on 17 September 1923. The church was put out to tender for f.62.500,-. The parishioners themselves did the groundwork from 21 October to 10 November. The foundation stone was laid on 21 January 1924 and on 13 December of that year the church was taken into use. The church was consecrated only on 20 June 1927 by Mgr. A.F. Diepen, bishop of 's-Hertogenbosch.

The small three-aisle village church with central entrance tower is located on the south side of the Twijnmeer and belonged until 1997 to the territory of the municipality of Boxtel.

Description

Oriented, three-aisle transept-less basilical church with facades of machine-made brick laid in running bond under a gabled roof covered with Maas slates; the side aisles have lean-to roofs. The nave comprises three bays. The choir closure is 5/8 and has a slightly lower roof than the centre nave. The tower, centrally located in the west facade, consists of four tapering stories and is crowned by a pyramidal roof covered with slates. The church is soberly ornamented with pointed arch windows and niches and herringbone arches. The design could therefore perhaps better be described as gothicizing than neogothic. In the lowest story of the tower the pointed arch entrance is placed. The double clamped wooden church door with wrought-iron fittings is placed slightly recessed within it.

The cordon moulding situated above the entrance also serves as the springing for the large three-part rose window with brick montants and coloured leaded glass. The third story comprises at each side the sound holes with sound boards placed one above the other. The fourth story has on all sides three equally high pointed arch niches, the outer two of which are provided with a narrow rectangular window. The low side aisles are covered with a lean-to roof and have above the drip moulding per bay two pointed arch windows with leaded glass panes. The side aisles are supported by buttresses placed between the windows. Each of the side aisles has at the eastern end a small three-sided apse. The clerestory of the church consists per bay of two coupled herringbone arch windows with leaded glass panes. Below the eaves runs a frieze with a brick dentil moulding. The choir is slightly lower than the centre nave and has a 5/8 closure with tall lancet windows between the buttresses.

Against the south-eastern side aisle stands the sacristy; a building on rectangular plan of one storey with facades in fair-faced brickwork under a hipped roof with slates laid in Maas bond. Centrally on the ridge stands a tall brick chimney. The sacristy has square-headed windows with sash frames in pointed arch recesses. The windows are fitted with burglar bars.

In the interior the architect has attempted to achieve the best possible view of the priest's choir by making the pointed arch arcades broad and high and keeping the mass of the piers as small as possible. The length of the three bays in the centre nave is 22.05 m. The total width of nave and side aisles 18.75 m. Each of the square bays has a stone star vault whose ribs are enlivened with polychrome brickwork. Each bay comprises two side aisle sections, each vaulted with a separate groin vault. The elevation of the nave is bipartite: arcade and clerestory. On the vaults polychrome figurative paintings were applied between 1925 and 1950. The maker of these is unknown. Below the clerestory a stepped band moulding has been applied which continues to the bottom of the coupled clerestory windows. In the slightly raised choir much of the light admission is removed by the organ which was originally located on the organ gallery in the tower. The maker of the organ is probably J.J. Vollebregt (1793-1872). The organ dating from 1848 with two keyboards and pedal comes from the demolished Waterstaatskerk and was placed in this church in 1927, provided with electro-pneumatic action in 1951, moved to the priest's choir in 1961 and on that occasion expanded with one register. The instrument contains important pipework from organ maker Vollebregt. The organ case is richly decorated in neo-baroque style. The choir is further ornamented by holy figure sculptures in white stone on pedestals under a gothicizing baldachin; these were made around 1927 by the workshop of M. van Bokhoven-Jonkers from 's-Hertogenbosch. Other inventory items include: the leaded glass windows decorated with New Testament motifs in the priest's choir from 1926-1927. The white stone Stations of the Cross in the side walls, made by H. Jonkers in 1937. The pulpit from the Waterstaatskerk from 1845-1850, made by the brothers Goossens from 's-Hertogenbosch. In the tower is a bell frame with bell by anonymous founder, 1339, diameter 80.7 cm; is out of use.

Valuation

The church is of general importance. The church has cultural-historical values as a particular expression of the spiritual development of small-scale Catholic village life in general and of the typological development of the village church. The church has architectural-historical values because of the applied style elements and because of the place the buildings occupy within the oeuvre of architect Wolter te Riele. The church also has architectural-historical values because of the distinctive interpretation the architect has given to the neogothic formal language and because of the particular coherence between exterior and interior.

The church has ensemble values because of the functional and historically spatial coherence with the other complex components. The complex is important because of the rare character of such well-preserved ensembles.
