Inleiding

Waardering

VILLA van algemeen architectuurhistorisch en cultuurhistorisch belang:

- vanwege de sobere, maar levendig gelede architectuur, waarbij de samengestelde kap een belangrijke rol speelt;

- vanwege de bewaard gebleven interieuronderdelen;

- vanwege de gaafheid van vooral het exterieur;

- vanwege de ligging als onderdeel van de gevelwand van de Noordersingel, waar het zich door kleur en vorm en vrijstaande ligging onderscheidt;

Introduction

VILLA, built by Hendrik Kramer in 1910-1911 for the merchant N. Siebesma in the Transitional style. Probably a first internal renovation in the 1930s, later some modifications when the property became a dental practice.

Description

EXTERIOR: VILLA on a basically rectangular ground plan with front extensions two storeys high and two bays wide, built of brown brick, which on the upper storey is partly rendered. The composite hipped roof is covered with red flat Frisian tiles and fitted with roof ornaments. The front façade is provided with two three-sided bay windows, the left one spanning both storeys, the right one on the ground floor only, above which is a balcony. The balcony retained the original railings in simple geometric forms. It is partly covered by a portion of the roof shield extended as a canopy, which is supported by curved braces. The windows are all rectangular, on the upper storey provided with glazing bars in the upper lights. Midway along the left side façade is a single-storey extension with a hipped roof, topped with a roof ornament, which contains the entrance. The somewhat recessed front door was renewed. Behind this entrance section, a stairwell extends over two storeys with narrow, tall windows. The right side façade is entirely closed except for one window and still contains a projecting chimney stack. The roof above the left bay has three hipped sections. Both the roof edge and hip of the middle section are curved upward. The remaining hips are bent. The rear façade contains a later built or enlarged conservatory. Above this is a three-part balcony window. The far-projecting roof here was later somewhat shortened to allow more light into the balcony room. The rear roof shield contains two roof dormers. INTERIOR: The property was, possibly in the 1930s, somewhat modernised, during which the doors and their surrounds were altered. From the building period there have been preserved, among other things, the tile wainscoting in the vestibule, the French window in the salon, the marble chimney mantel and the stucco ceiling in the front room and two servants' rooms on the attic storey.

Assessment

VILLA of general architectural-historical and cultural-historical significance:

- on account of the austere yet lively articulated architecture, in which the composite roof plays an important role;

- on account of the preserved interior components;

- on account of the completeness, particularly of the exterior;

- on account of its location as part of the façade wall of the Noordersingel, where it distinguishes itself by colour and form and freestanding position;

- as an important work by architect Hendrik Kramer from the period when he built in the Transitional style.
