Inleiding
Aan het begin van de twintigste eeuw was de neoclassicistische beeldhouwer Pier Pander (1864-1919) bezig aan het ontwerp van een totaalkunstwerk, bestaande uit een beeldengroep van personificaties, die in een KUNSTTEMPEL geplaatst moesten worden. Toen Pander in 1919 overleed liet hij een groot deel van zijn vermogen en artistieke erfenis na aan de gemeente Leeuwarden. Pander's vriend, de architect J.M. van der Meij, heeft in samenwerking met de vormgever N.P. de Koo de reeds ontwikkelde plannen voor de tempel uitgevoerd in 1924 op de Noorderdwinger in de Prinsentuin. De Romeinse beeldhouwer Ernesto Gazzeri voerde naar de wens van Pander zijn gipsen modellen uit in marmer.
Omschrijving
EXTERIEUR: Kunsttempel in de vorm van een ronde centraalbouw met omgang en voorgeplaatste ingangspartij op rechthoekige grondslag, het geheel uitgevoerd in grauwbruin metselwerk in koppenverband. De eerste bouwlaag heeft geen muuropeningen met uitzondering van de ingangspartij, die een onder een rondboog gevatte deur met cassetten bevat, waarboven een in een archivolt geplaatst beeldhouwwerk van Pander zit, voorstellende `De Dageraad'. De lichtbeuk van de centraalbouw is voorzien van gepaarde rondboogvensters. Zowel de kegelvormige kap van de centraalbouw als het zadeldak van de ingangspartij zijn gedekt met riet.
INTERIEUR: Inwendig scheiden zes rondbogige openingen het centrale gedeelte van de omgang. Onder de arcade zijn vijf beelden geplaatst. De vensters in de lichtbeuk zijn bezet met glas-in-lood. Er is een ziende, onbeschoten bekapping.

Introduction
At the beginning of the twentieth century the neoclassicistic sculptor Pier Pander (1864-1919) was engaged in the design of a total work of art, consisting of a group of sculptures of personifications, which were to be placed in an ART TEMPLE. When Pander died in 1919 he left a large part of his wealth and artistic legacy to the municipality of Leeuwarden. Pander's friend, the architect J.M. van der Meij, together with designer N.P. de Koo executed the already developed plans for the temple in 1924 on the Noorderdwinger in the Prinsentuin. The Roman sculptor Ernesto Gazzeri executed his plaster models in marble according to Pander's wishes.
Description
EXTERIOR: Art temple in the form of a round central building with ambulatory and forecourt entrance section on rectangular ground plan, the whole executed in greyish-brown brickwork in header bond. The first storey has no wall openings with the exception of the entrance section, which contains a door set within a round arch with cassettes, above which sits a sculptural work by Pander placed in an archivolt, depicting 'The Dawn'. The clerestory of the central building is provided with paired round-arched windows. Both the conical roof of the central building and the gabled roof of the entrance section are covered with thatch.
INTERIOR: Internally six round-arched openings separate the central section from the ambulatory. Under the arcade five sculptures are placed. The windows in the clerestory are fitted with stained glass. There is a visible, unboarded ceiling.

Art temple of general cultural historical and architectural historical significance:
- as a typologically rare and exceptional monument for an artist who saw his plans for a total work of art realised;
